CAPTAIN Jonathan Fowler is taking nothing for granted as he looks to steer Walkden home to their first Bolton League title for 10 years.

The Harriett Street men opened up a 14-point gap at the top of the Premiership division with a convincing 74-run home victory over second-placed Horwich last Saturday.

With six points for a win that gives them a two-match breathing space with eight games to go.

But Fowler, who top scored for his side with 60 coming in at number seven against Horwich then took 2-11 off 2.5 overs, is just focusing on tomorrow's game at Daisy Hill.

"We're not looking too far ahead, just taking it game by game," he said.

"We've not had any success yet, hopefully we will do at the end of the season though."

Walkden have been in formidable form throughout the season, winning nine of their 10 league games with their only defeat coming at home to Bradshaw in week four.

They are also going well in the Peter Stafford Trophy with two wins out of two in the group stages.

A first Warburton Cup league championship trophy since 2008 is the obvious priority this season.

That last win was the fifth time in eight years the title ended up at The Oval, and Walkden are focused on trying to bring it back again for the first time in a decade.

"We're taking it one game at a time and this weekend it’s Daisy Hill who are a good side and won't be easy to beat at their own ground," Fowler said.

"There are no easy teams in this league, all games are a must-win."

The captain says the team have got themselves into this strong position with a group effort.

"The key so far has been the vibe in the dressing room," added Fowler.

"We have been far better as a unit than we were last year.

"The boys are playing for each other. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves in recent years, but this year was about moulding a team that, hopefully, we can keep together and build on.

"It's been nice to get an overseas amateur [Nick Stobart] over who is eager to do well, and, of course, the experienced older heads who have joined us this year have been brilliant.

"The whole team have been great, each player has contributed to games this year, which has been ideal.

"The new boys who have come in have added a great vibe around the club and, of course, we have a very experienced professional who has been outstanding so far."

Fowler believes the standard this season in the Bolton League is high, adding: "It's very good. A few clubs have managed to get pros and overseas amateurs in which has strengthened the league.

"Also this year some clubs have looked to bring in players from outside the Bolton League which makes a change and brings a different proposition to our league."

While the league title is the priority, Fowler says Walkden will also be going all out to win the Peter Stafford Trophy, in which the last eight teams will be known after the final round of group games takes place a week on Sunday.

And he says should his side manage to get their hands on any silverware this season it will be for more than just the personnel in the team, but also for those who put hours of work in behind the scenes to make cricket possible.

"We play to win every trophy and that goes for the Peter Stafford Trophy too," he said.

"It would be great to win a possible double.

"There are too many people to mention [at the club] in all honesty – we have a lot of people who work really hard to get the club and the ground fit for play every weekend.

"All clubs have them. So, as a team, we hope to give back by winning trophies for the club."
