ANTHONY Stirling is a double town champion after adding the Bolton title to the Bury crown.

The Harwood member won the Bolton Championship on his home course, coming back from five down after 10 holes to clinch victory on the 20th.

He beat Turton's Liam Ball after a remarkable climax which saw Stirling fight back to win the 17th and 18th holes to force a sudden death play-off.

Stirling became the first Harwood member for 20 years to win the Bolton Golf Association Championships.

He was not the only player from his club to have success, with Steve Hunt also winning the lowest nett prize on the Saturday.

Harwood secretary Mark Schofield said: “This was what we as a club started off to achieve when we first met with the championship committee in January.

“On behalf of myself, captain Tony McNeille and all members of management I would like to thank all those that helped on the day, and prior, in getting the course and clubhouse in the condition it was presented in, and also thanks to those that came along and supported.

“To put the icing on the cake we had not one winner but two."

Stirling's home club is now Formby but he comes from a golfing family who have all been members at Harwood.

His brother Ian is just starting as an assistant professional at Turton and his uncle Donald is a PGA professional and coach now living in Austria.
