LOSTOCK’S Mark Liptrot travelled to Wales with more than 500 other runners to tackle the 43rd Jewson International Snowdon Race and put in an impressive time to finish fifth out of 37 in his age group.

Fresh from completing the 34km Wasdale Horseshoe fell race the previous week, Liptrot took on what is one of the toughest mountain races in the UK, attracting some of the best mountain runners in Europe.

The 10-mile route consists of a brutal 3,000 feet of ascent from Llanberis, to the summit of the highest peak in Wales and England, followed by a five-mile plunge to the finish.

He completed the gruelling course in an impressive time of 1hr 38mins 39secs, which earned him 203rd place out of 574 overall.

Mark Shuttleworth and Mark Checkley also competed in a mountain race this week, taking on Ingleborough Fell Race in the Yorkshire Dales.

Ingleborough is the second highest mountain in Yorkshire and the challenging race takes in around 2,000 feet of ascent in just under seven miles.

Both put in a strong performance with Shuttleworth finishing 121st out of 209 runners with a time of 1:13:10 and Checkley clocking 172nd with a time of 1:22:05.

Wednesday brought the third and final race in this summer’s local Jubilee series, with nine Lostockers taking on the tough five-mile undulating course through Rivington.

James Jackson was the first Lostocker home, and 26th overall, with a time of 32:24, followed by Stuart Hatton (36:09), Andy Laycock (39:02), Paul Walton (39:45), Paul Lacey (40:07), Rachel Hancock (40:08), Donna Kelsall (40:21), Heather Soden (42:34) and David Wilcock (45:54).

Wilcock finished first in his age category in the overall Jubilee series and Donna Kelsall won a prize for placing fourth overall in her age category.

Meanwhile, Lostock’s Sally McCoy and Vikki Goodyear raised £110 for Guide Dogs for the Blind, serving coffee and cake at the Jubilee race.
