ADLINGTON broke their all-time record runs total last weekend – and did not know it.

The Huyton Lane side scored 309-8 in a 197-run victory at Little Hulton, eclipsing their previous best total in a single match by nine.

The record had stood since they scored 300 in a Cross Cup game at Spring View in 2001, but no one from the club was aware they were making history at Little Hulton on the day.

"We didn't realise at the time," said Adlington chairman Nick Chamberlain who was scoring the match.

"There was a rain break at 292-7 and I think our captain Simon Trim just wanted to get over 300.

"We didn't realise at that point we were breaking the record but it was felt it was getting close."

It was not until the following day the record was confirmed.

"I checked through the records on Sunday and I told Simon in the afternoon when we played at Westhoughton in the Peter Stafford Trophy."

Professional Kamran Hussain top-scored in the record-breaking innings at Little Hulton with 88 and Iain Critchley added 78.

The pair also took the honours with the ball as Hussain took 4-40 and Critchley 3-18.

Adlington are third in the Association, level on points with Tonge in second.

They are six points behind leaders Little Lever and six above Golborne in fourth.

Astley Bridge are another four behind with Blackrod two behind them.

With six points for a win and plenty of matches coming up between the top six it is building up into an exciting battle for the top two promotion places.

Chamberlain says his team, who travel to bottom club Eagley tomorrow, will be doing everything they can on the field to get one of those two places, but admits it is a double-edged sword.

"The players are striving to get as high as they can but they are aware of what's happening at Atherton and Daisy Hill," he said.

"They were promoted last year and are struggling in the higher division this year because of how strong the other teams are.

"It's a poisoned chalice. If we went up we would have to strengthen our team which would do away with the sort of close-knit team we've got at the moment."
