WITH only two weeks remaining of the Men’s League season, many teams still have much to play for.

The Division One title has already been settled, with David Lloyd Chorley A undefeated to date; their latest success a 9-0 whitewash against relegated Tyldesley A.

Their nearest rivals are Ellesmere A and Markland Hill A. Both had comfortable wins this week against Lostock A and Leigh A respectively. John Nuttall and Andy Westmorland took three sets for Ellesmere at Lostock, while Martin Robinson and Arfat Khan recorded the only successes for the hosts.

Markland Hill’s victory was more emphatic at 8-1. James Moores and Leon Bellis scored Leigh’s only set. The second relegation spot is destined for either Lostock A or Chorley A. Chorley lost at home to Holcombe Brook A. Jamie Oakes and Tom Lemon won three sets for the visitors, while James Richardson and Matt Croasdale took two sets for Chorley.

The Division Two champions and runners-up have also been settled with Hawkshaw A undefeated. Their latest success was a 7-2 victory at David Lloyd Abitare B, with Ed Brown and Jamie Allen winning all of their sets.

David Lloyd Abitare’s senior team have secured runners-up spot with a 7-2 triumph at Ellesmere B, despite Ged Sheppard and Richard Lane taking two sets for Ellesmere.

A 5-4 win for Darwen, led by Matt Barlow and Joe Barnes, against Elton Vale A condemned Vale to bottom spot.

Divisions Three and Five are the most competitive, with six teams in each vying for the top two spots.

Division Three leaders Leigh B, who lead Lostock B on sets, beat Markland Hill B 6-3, a result that virtually ends Markland’s top-two aspirations.

Lostock B had a tight win at promotion rivals Winton as two tie-break wins for Matt Brindle and Steven Mitchell were enough to secure the points in a 5-4 win.

Andrew Seal and Matt Langlands won three sets for Eagley A at Roe Green A, but their team went down 6-3.

In Division Five, Elton Vale B retained top spot with a 5-4 victory over Meadow Hill A, despite Alex and Jack Milner scoring three sets for Meadow Hill.

A solid all-round performance saw Lostock C win 6-3 at Bradshaw B to keep second spot, but they have two difficult matches remaining and know any slip could let in Markland Hill C, Meadow Hill A or even Bradshaw B or Monton.

David Lloyd Abitare C defeated their only serious rivals, Hawkshaw B, to secure the Division Four title, despite Ed Hall and Ste Cross recording three victories for Hawkshaw, who have at least secured second place.

Walmer B appear destined for relegation after going down 6-3 at Eagley B, who boosted their survival prospects.

At Claremont, the result went down to the last set on court with the match against Bradshaw A tied at 4-4.

Craig Owen and Sina Ghanbari-Saheli recovered from 5-3 down to take the set and the match for Bradshaw, with an impressive tie-break.

Division Six is a two-horse race, between Holcombe Brook C and Ellesmere C and both had comfortable victories, over relegated Hawkshaw D and mid-table Bradshaw C respectively.

They meet in the last match of the season which should prove to be the title decider.

Markland Hill D lead Division Seven, but Lostock D and Roe Green B are still in the hunt. All three won convincingly this week.

Matt and Charlie Dixon took three sets for Hawkshaw E at Lostock, but that was Hawshaw’s only success, as the rest of the team failed to register a game. Roe Green’s final two matches are at home to Lostock D and Markland Hill D, which should make for an interesting finish.
