WANDERERS emerged from a fruitless deadline day looking to resume their chase for reinforcements right away.

Although Ken Anderson failed to land a striker before the 5pm deadline, frustration switched immediately towards recruitment and filling up to four vacant loan spots in the squad before August 31.

MK Dons’ attacker Chuks Aneke is understood to be one of the players being seriously considered, and could be offered a deal which is made permanent in January.

Birmingham City left-back Jonathan Grounds and goalkeeper David Stockdale also remain viable targets.

Disappointment among supporters hit fever pitch yesterday as Wanderers lost out on top striker target Joe Garner, who according to reports, is on the verge of joining local rivals Wigan Athletic.

Phil Parkinson had turned to the former Preston North End man after missing out on Bradford City’s Charlie Wyke but speaking this evening, Whites chairman Anderson said he had been unwilling to “enter into a bidding war for a player whose price escalates beyond our own valuation.”

Anderson said he had made two six-figure bids for strikers but claims the club’s failure to land the players had been down to market forces driving up prices.

“Obviously, this is very disappointing but, under my watch, this club shall never repeat the mistakes of the past and we will continue to operate on a commercial and financially prudent basis,” he said.

“Clubs were hanging on to players they wanted to move on to the very last minute in the hope of achieving an inflated price and in some cases that is what has happened and those who have not been sold will probably now go out on loan.

“That said we must not forget that we have already brought in 10 new senior players this summer and we are still hoping to bring some loan players in before the end of the month. So far we have only signed one loan player.”

Wanderers also made a loan offer for Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer which broke down when they failed to offer the 25-year-old the guarantee of first team football.

Parkinson’s side take on Bristol City in their first home game of the season on Saturday.
