A DERBY demolition put an emphatic full stop on another miserable week for Bolton Wanderers, with hosts Wigan Athletic running riot in a 5-2 win.

Wanderers’ off-field woes continued apace but on the field was an equally dour time, with the Whites shipping five goals to their rivals from up the road.

Joe Garner fired Latics ahead just four minutes in and Wigan rarely looked like surrendering their advantage, hitting the net four times in the second half.

The high-tempo performance Wanderers assistant manager Steve Parkin said would be needed simply never materialised, though they held their own in a tense, nervous first half to trail by that sole strike from Garner.

But by the time 10 second-half minutes had elapsed Wigan were three goals to the good and giving their own survival hopes a timely shot in the arm.

Nick Powell’s shot took a cruel deflection off the sliding Jack Hobbs and beat Remi Matthews at his near post, clipping the upright as it went in.

And as if Wigan needed a helping hand, it was provided by Matthews, who rolled the ball from his hands to launch it clear, unaware Michael Jacobs was lurking over his shoulder. Jacobs pounced to roll the ball to Powell, who was given the simplest of finishes, one he was never going to pass up.

Just after the hour mark Gary O’Neil, Bolton’s most willing of runners, offered some hope when he pounced on a bouncing ball to make the score 3-1.

That hope was dashed within seven minutes when Jacobs, just a few seconds after being denied by a smart save from Matthews, crashed his next effort into the top corner.

Substitute Sammy Ameobi scored with 10 minutes left, not that anyone was anticipating a grandstand finish on the back of it.

And Wigan once again killed off their hapless visitors with a fifth goal a minute later, Leon Clarke heading home to send Wigan climbing two places, 10 points ahead of Wanderers, whose relegation prospects look grim.
