Blades cut Wanderers out of FA Cup

4:33pm Saturday 5th January 2008

Wanderers 0, Sheffield United 1.

GARY Megson's gamble of fielding a weakened side against against Championship opponents failed as Wanderers crashed out of the FA Cup to Bryan Robson's Sheffield United.

Megson made seven changes to the side that beat Derby County in the Premiership in midweek and paid the penalty as David Carney's 42nd minute strike put the Blades into the fourth round.

Wanderers' first home defeat under Megson was a bitterly disappointing affair in which visiting keeper, Paddy Kenny, was never seriously tested.

Carney put United in front three minutes before half time when Wanderers' back line was breached by Stephen Quinn's through ball and, much to the delight of almsot 5,000 travelling fans, Robson's men maintained the advantage.

Wanderers had the majority of possession in the second half but managed little in the way of scoring chances.

Wanderers: Al-Habsi; Hunt, Michalik, Andy O'Brien, Cid; Joey O'Brien; Stelios, Guthrie, Cohen, Diouf; Braaten. Subs: Dzemaili for Hunt 46 mins, Wilhelmsson for Diouf 64 mins, Meite for Andy O'Brien 78 mins. Not used: Andranik, Bogdan.

Sheffiled Utd: Kenny; Geary, Kilgallon, Bromby, Armstrong; Carney, Hendrie, Montgomery, Quinn; Stead, Shelton. Subs: Sharp for Hendrie 73 mins, Hulse for Shelton 73 mins, Gillespie for Geary 76 mins. Not used: Lucketti, Bennett.

Referee: Peter Walton (Northampton).

Attendance: 15,286.

Sorry but this is a massive disrespect to the loyal Bolton fans. To play a second string side at home in the FA Cup in the 50th anniversary of you winning it (against my team) is an insult.
It demonstrates that money is all - the Cup is now a subsidiary competition opposed to the money earned by staying in the Prem.

Shame on you Gartside and your pursuit of money

what a complete disregard for the tradition of this competition. the gingger one got it spot off a lucky break on wednesday against derby with a full sregnth squad should have told him we are not up to scratch so his ineptness turns to a team that would not have a chance against a league 2 side about time wholesale changes were made not just to the team but also management board and backroom staff if Q.P.R can attract money men why not a prem side i fear that unless this happens then megson and co will make us another notts forest in the wilderness never knowing if the good times will ever return go now megson you puppet

Yes, we are in the last 32 of euro but what about the f.a.cup. Stuff that shall we? And yes, I was not there cause I was at work - got home about 5 ish. Trotter, Bolton says...
5:42pm Sat 5 Jan 08

Hang-on all you who are having a pop at Gary Megson, not until you read into the full story that is Megson from my reckoning WAS told NOT to play Anelka due to his impending transfer, our only striker given Davies was suspended, Harsanyi over looked again.

Megson would have loved to have had Nic in his line up today because he like all Bolton fans wants to win every game and given Anelka's strike rate then, a goal or two would have been the order of the day from the French genius.

Saying all that I fully condem the transfer system at this time of season and the transfer regulations and rules as they are full stop.

Andranik must be wondering what the heck is going on at our club, he must have done something wrong not to get onto the pitch today and this is where I can have a go at Megson because like many on here I rate the lad.

Keep the faith

If Gartside is such a money man then doesnt the idiot realise we get around £30m for staying in the premiership plus all the extras for finishing in as higher position as possible. So selling Anelka for a stupid amout (because we all know he will) for around 10-15m is that really clever CALL YOURSELF A BUSINESSMAN and after all the great BWFC fans have stuck by your club through thick and thinthat aint going to happen if NICO goes.

What a sad sad day, but maybe a sign of things to come. We have been lucky the past few weeks, today ower luck ran out. At the moment Bolton are not even close to a prem side and by todays result would have trouble staying in the lower divisions. I expect Nic will be gone by this time next week and who could blame him.(Thanx Nic you was the class of the team, good luck) At this time Bolton will start the desent back down the prem only this time there will be no escape. What happened to all the money and players we where promissed (No need to sell to bring in new players). With only a good kicking in the Europian cup to come the dark days have returned. We will be lucky not to finish bottom of the prem this season. A sad sad day to be a Bolton fan.

Buy 3 or 4 players eg, 1 or 2 defenders and 2 CREATIVE midfielders to assist ANELKA as he has around 20-30 goals in him even at BWFC get your head out of the clouds wake up and do some good for the club!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As much as I am an unhappy Wanderer, that's taking things a bit far!

Selling Nicolas Anelka does not guarantee us doing a Bradford City and plummeting to League 2. FACT.

what i am getting from the team performances is that megson hasn't got a clue. A good player does not become a bad player overnight and we have many good players at bolton. However, a poor coach is a poor coach and that is what we have with megson - championship level at the most optimistic reading. Gartside et al are responsible as they 1) appointed Lee permanently when any sane person would have tried him till season end and then taken a view (clearly that would have been to look elsewhere and with a high placed team, UEFA Cup maybe we could have got a decent coach) 2) sacking Lee as a response to the discontent of some players and 3) appointiing megson. we will live with the consequences of these failures of judgement for a long time ...

Gartside employed an unemployed coach and for me that is were we went wrong, there were some decent coaches out there we could have persued, but that costs more money than what Gartside decided to spend and this fact alone about our expenditure, or the lack of it is what really makes me think that Gartside is tightening all the pursestrings so that the club is more viable to buy.

P.S: Everybody in football is telling Newcastle to give Allardyce time, were as Sven at Manchester City has had just the same amount of time and money which brings the whole question of employing the right manager in the first place, Newcastle are struggling with an ordinary manager and City are doing fantastic under a very good manager.

This devalues the competition and impacts on every proper supporter.

We lost an FA Cup tie, so therefore Megson is a crap manager, Gartside is a money grabbing waste of space, every player that was on the pitch is rubbish, all the players that didnt play are fantastic, we are going to get relegated not just this season but next season too. I wonder if Everton and Blackburn will be joining us in division 2, or were their even worse defeats just part of what happens in football? I'm as frustrated as the next fan about how the FA Cup is no longer a priority, but this is no more Megson's fault than it is anyone else's. Agree with you . Its turning into another carling cup . Just proves the top four clubs are getting bigger and bigger because no other club in the last 12 years , have won the fa cup . So who's decision was it NOT to play Anelka, we spend £8m on a world class striker and do not play him - that is my gripe with Gartside, Megson is a yes man in my opinion and will not get a penny from the Anelka transfer, well he might get about £5m if he is lucky, Gartside for me is doing his best to prime the club for someone to buy.

Just returned from the Reebok.

Firstly congratulations to Sheffield United. As much as it hurts me to say, they outplayed us, outsang us and thoroughly deserved to win the game.

I went expecting to see the sort of team we played but not the performance. Apart from Guthrie who was so far ahead of anyone else on the field, we had nothing at all. Totally devoid of any idea whatsoever and considering that most are players wanting to get in the side, it only showed me that most of them are only worthy of the exit door.

Cohen started off well, but ran out of steam (as you would expect from his first game). Czemali looked busy but needs more games. Half the side were awful and an embarrasment. No doubt they were trying but if that is all we have in reserve we are in big trouble.

Somebody mentioned to me that he watches the reserve team and none of those players ever play. So what the hell are we paying them for. In the old days that is where you played and kept your game. I wish I had a job where I did sod all for about 6 weeks and then played a game.

Right now I'm finding it very hard to be positive about our chances this season.

I'm going to have a large drink or twenty.

I am not saying Megson is a crap manager, he has inherited these players.
I am disapponted he makes a comment which can be used, so obviously, to motivate the opposition.
My main gripe is that these fringe players have had a chance and didn't perform.
The performance and result says it all...

Quite how we manage to get so many to watch our home cup games baffles me. I have sat through 5 cup matches this saeon, 2 goals I think and 5 clueless, tedious performances.

Why more people dont boo the team off at half time and full time also escapes me. Another 2 useless midfielders, and please tell me Andranik has been playing away with Mrs Megson as I can think of no other reason why he is behind that lot today. Megson even put Meite on when we were 1-0 down !!!!

Technically, we cant pass or cross the ball. J O'Brien has returned as an imposter, completely unable to play a simple pass. I dont ever want to see Cid, Braaten, Wilhelm again. Why not plat Hrsanyi and some young guys?

Today saw nothing created, no energy or enthusiasm. Not one Bolton player looked Prem material. A disgrace to the club. Megson and Knox- you picked the team, why the permanent bewildered looks during the match? Do us a favour- find something else to do at weekends.

What a shame it as come to this, from what i have read we had no spirit, there is no spirit left in the FA Cup, the premiership influx of players from Europe & beyond as degraded what was once the best Cup competion in the world, you cant just blame sky, we have to bear part of the blame by paying the high fees sky charge, and the chairman these are the biggest leeches, years ago it was an honour to be a club chairman, now its how much they can be paid, take our own chairman how much did he fleece the club this year £333000 + for what sitting in the directors box, and then giving Megson the job when only 6% of bolton fans wanted him, this was due to the fact he had been out of work for a long period of time, he was cheap and he would do what he wanted him to do, take today, we all know why Nic was dropped, if he had played he would of been cup tied, if Megson was to beleived and we wasnt selling him, he would of played him, the fact he didnt just proves the papers over the last few weeks are correct and he is going, its a shame it as come to this but all the chairman can see is ££££££££££££££££££££
£££££ total disregard to the people who love the club and pay him to sit in the directors box, as much as it pains me to say this i beleive we will go down this season, and cant see anything turning around until we oust him from his position, we need a big investor, one who is prepared to risk his money, not one who is looking to gain,

Shock result,no chance. The only shock was that the bookies gave such good odds it happening.Year 2007 gave us 34 points, a goal difference of -24 and 2 away wins.Recent results are only papering over the cracks,MUFC was a good result but i doubt if they will ever play so poorly again and xmas came early when Taggert left out 'twinkletoes'
Munich, brilliant couple of days on the lash and good fightback but what a c@@k-up by their coach to let us back into it.Red Star Rovers couldn't beat my local sunday league team and ended up with zilch points, enough said.Back to the league and even with LSL in charge we could still have lost our away games.Wigan,Birmingh
am and Derby were all games where we have flattered to deceive and certainly used up any luck we were due.Tough times now with the 'pig farmers' next up and no defence.GMs honeymoon, anniversar
y and whatever else has been and gone.Ginger he is,Mourinho he isn't.I'm not normally a pessimist but i can hear the fat lady having a gargle.I just can't see all the teams around us having bad runs until the end of the season.Last home game i saw was against the greeks the night before i had my knee replaced and it may be a while before i'm able to get back, judging by all reports i'm doing the right thing.Mr Gartslime it seems obvious you are on the way out but don't take our club with you.Pessimist? it is very clear from the team selection and performance that megson hasn't got a clue. A good player does not become a bad player overnight and i still maintain that we have many good players at bolton.

He has given his all to this club, been straight with us from day 1 & is well punching below his weight at a club that doesnt match his ambition to perform at the highest level. What really saddens me is that this ambition is not matched by the Board. I havent heard in a long time garslime talk about his vision for the club compared to those from other clubs and that just sums it up. It staggers me to hear the speculation of the £10 million value for Anelka, the second top goal scorer in the league, still young, playing in the french national side who are arguably one of the best teams in the world when someone as **** as Bent goes for £16 million. I suppose it doesnt matter even if we got £50 million for Anelka, the Board wouldnt put it back into the club

I for one am a Gary Megson fan, one of the few on this post. He has inherited a relatively poor squad, and has rightly made the Premier League our top priority. Since coming in he has strengthened our position in the league and as a result the confidence in the team has improved for all to see. If he is given money to spend, I believe he can make some good acquisitions and we will continue to see progress made under his supervision. Last time I checked, Anelka is still a Bolton player. People are just commenting on press speculation. We had all this in August, and then he signed a new contract. As for today, what is the point in risking players in a competition we will never win! To say that was poor was like saying we deserved something at sunderland (I thought it wouldnt get any worse) but yes it did. They were worse than sunderland and we made them look half decent.

I knew anelka was never going to play today but I sadly expected some passion from the reserves. If we need them to save us from relegation then we are doomed.

Megson inherited a squad that qualified for europe. the only 2 missing players are TBH and Faye.
To replace these players he is looking at WBA and Forest players.
If we take the atitude of not bothering to play our best team because we are not going to win the trophy, why bother trying any week?

We had a kid for a quid offer and reduced prices to get people in the ground, then serve up am absolute pile of sh1t. Those people are never going to come again, £1 was a rip off!
Not one striker on the teamsheet, we are 1-0 down so we bring on Meite and end up being played off the park by a struggling championship team.

If the 85 in your name is the year you were born, then you won't have seen this thing before, Plenty of us have and trust me Exeter in December on a weds night, and many other such fixtures are ones that you do not want to be a part of, unfortunately, the way things are going with our club, you are going to see plenty of them.

3 points clear of the drop zone - a run of 2 or 3 bad results and we are back in the drop zone. I would not say that Smeghead has strengthened our position - he has just been very lucky (especially on Wednesday evening in the 91st minute!!!). I do agree that confidence has grown b ut that can soon slip again - especially if a couple of the big names disappear and no-one/unknown are brought in.

Can't bring myself to comment yet!!! Well done to Sheffield for their offside goal. Here's what Megson has just said:

Star striker Nicolas Anelka was left out as one of seven changes but boss Megson insisted: "I do not regret them.

"We picked a team with an eye on what has gone on with most players having a lot of games in a short space of time.

"A lot of clubs have done this. The disappointment is a number of players did not take the chance given to them."

He added: "They are highly-paid Premier League squad members, who did not rise to the challenge.

"There was an assumption from one two there will be another chance and you can't do that."

He was bound to play reserves who you all agreed had served the club very well in Europe (I totally agree that the romance of the FA Cup has been devalued but that has come about as a result of modern-day priorities, hardly unique to our club, and, if I remember rightly, started by Ferguson's attitude to it a few years ago:-Eric, please feel free to comment!)

Many recent posts have called for GM to play our European squad players, to look at our newcomers and fringe players, and others have said that some of our stars look tired, so I'm puzzled that when this actually happens, there is universal criticism.

Our reserves have lost to a team who were in the prem last year; other prem teams have suffered even worse fates than us today. Anelka may or may not leave, but either way he would not have been selected today, just as the other first-team members weren't.

What IS upsetting, however, is the imbalanced selection, with a minimal strike-force either on the field or on the bench, meaning that it was always going to be difficult to score or provide exciting, attacking football. This is what appalls the fans. They have a right to entertainment and at the moment the product is not value-for-money, so attendances will suffer.

We have lots of opportunities on TV these days to watch Arsenal, for example, and compare them with us; no one would begrudge the money to watch their brand of glorious, attacking football.

The other thing that dismays me is that whilst GM finally took the chance to try out some players, he continues to ignore Andranik who has energy to burn, an eye for a goal, and has always done well whenever he has played; he must be wondering what he has to do to get a chance. Harsanyi is another one in the same boat.

It's just to see what rif-raf we've got left when PG and ED sell Anelka next week and line there pockets. If the board had ambition thay should try and build around Anelka or keep him till the end of the season, selling makes GM job a lot harder i hope we dont go down i've already watch them play in all 4 div's and i dont want to go there again.

11 mill or 14 mill doesnt make sense against 60 mill if we go down.

Sign quality players or we go down either this season or next - you have been warned!!!!
Along with Everton and Blackburn presumably? If we had either of their results today everyoone would be demanding Megsons sacking. We lose a game and everyone connected with the club is hopeless, its pathetic. We lost today for a few reasons, and Anelka's presence wouldnt have made much difference, just as it hasnt in any away game this season. Anelka didnt play in any of our best away performances of the season (Fulham, Munich, Belgrade). Much as I like watching him play he is becoming overrated because we might lose him, there are plenty of games when he seems to go missing for ages. You can count the number of important goals he has scored this season on 1 hand and as for the other missing first teamers, who did we actually miss today? Taking Anelka out of the equation, only Gardner would have improved today's line up, who are all these "1st teamers" that we missed today?

Youri, can you name names re the exit door? Possibly Cid, but he showed in the 1st half he can be a decent back up. I honestly thought Bratten brought more to the game than either Davies or Nolan, he has skill, strength, pace, wins loads of headers, is a team player - it didnt quite happen for him today and he'll probably get 5 out of 10 but I for one can see what he offers. I cant see what Nolan offers, and recently the only thing Davies brings to the team is the ability to injure the opposition. For me Joey O'Brien is our worst outfield player, never fails to disappoint with his distribution, tackles recklessly, cant head, no pace, 1 footed, doesnt appear to care a great deal, can anyone explain what he brings to a team at this level?
Agree that (2nd half) Guthrie was head & shoulders above everyone. Dzemali looked shockingly poor, and Cohen was OK but we clearly wont see him again this season now that we are out of the FA Cup (and obviously if we had stayed in the cup and given him another game Megson would get slated for being disrespectful to the cup). As for not being positive, how about the fact that we have won our last 4 home games deservedly? Will that not do for starters?

Well, I didnt see one Bolton player break sweat today. None could pass straight, be bothered to run in to space or shoot straight. A complete lack of effort again by BWFC in a cup competition. I hope Nat has made his feelings known.

Potential lost revenue? Who knows? Next round tie at Old Trafford or Anfield, live on TV ? The present owner and management of our club deserve nothing more than a further huge drop in season ticket renewals.

Sure I expected changes today. Not Cid, J O'Brien in midfield, lone striker in Braaten. Andranik, Sinclair, Hrsanyi, the other young striker in the reserves maybe. Not a striker in sight !!! Meite thrown on with 10 mins to go? These are abject, pathetic selections made by a manager who is so far out of his depth. We used to have fans like that, making a noise away from home!
Now all we have are a load of moaners who don't realise that we've been punching over our weight for years.
The Club has been ripped apart by Gartside, the owner and Sammy Lee.
The latter has to be the worst ever appointee by this club. Sorry, I shouldn't have said club, I should have said "Business" or "franchise."
This is what the game of football has now come to. Ruined by Sky TV money. The greatest cup comp in the world has been devalued beyond belief by the pressures of staying in the Prem where all the money is.
I can understand why ( but I don't like it) teams threatened with relegation or involved in Europe playing weakened teams, but what excuse do Blackburn Rovers have?
In response to another poster who wondered why Villa and MU played full teams, the answer is obviously that they are not threatened with relegation and have a good chance of winning it!!

We lost, Megson chose a squad he thought could do the job on the day but now is probably realising the job ahead of him is going to be tough!!! Fans have a right to moan and complain and more so it is expected when we lose but as fans we should get behind our club and wait to see what happens. Just when we thought the Reebok was getting to be a fortress this happens. In his (megson) Interview on skysports you can tell he is gutted even more so as our fans are but when these players who earn a pretty penny and the Transfer window is open you'd expect them to rise to the occasion?? I just feel they have let us fans down today and take nothing away from Sheff utd their fans were terrific today and no wonder they are gloating!!! Remember we have scalped some big clubs in our time we have had a tough season so far the last thing we need is to fall out amongst ourselves!!!! I like the banter and all but Seriously drives me potty when fans don't see the bigger picture!!!

Stuart Hall on Sports Report described the team today as "lost sheep" - spot on for a scratch eleven as they never gelled. It might have been different if Braaten's shot hadn't been well blocked in the first half. As suspected several of the fringe squad members are not Premiership class, yet we will have at least three gaps to fill immediately (Diouf, Meite and Anelka). No one's mentioned it, but what did Diouf achieve today except get himself booked? He looked as if his main aims were to avoid injury and to show what superior skills he has - successful in the former only. Sheffield were allowed to be the better team and so "deserved" their win. In common with many other contributors I will need persuading in future that cup games are worth turning up to watch.

Left with FSA and all the others who broke their contracts.Pity there's not a DingDong Dave out there.
By the way FSA lost his most important sidekick to Chelsea when Avram Grant took charge. His name is Mike Forde and he his the one who ran the show behind the scenes.FSA maybe out soon and thats because the brains has left for Chelski and big money.

the fa cup has never been a top priority for us, if we had won, everybody would have been praising megson for the rotation of players. i didnt mind him making the changes he did to the team. we dont have a good enough squad to play the same player in every game. sammy lee signed for quantity rather than quality and that was a mistake.

I will be happy with safety and see what happens next year..happy to see Anelka go, we can rebuild off the back of him. My guess even if he doesn't go Megson will be given money to spend. I understand Davies definitely wants to seel this summer and he needs to invest to make sure he gets the decent price for the club that he wants. Cohen dzemaili Guthrie and taylor if he signs sound young and talented to me. Cisse am not sure about but we will see. January is a time for selling as well as buying. The FA Cup has been devalued by the Sky mission to undermine lower tier football for the benefit of the elite.Hence the Blackburn, Bolton, Everton,Birmingham etc results. The inclusion of players like Cid, Braaten etc is to put them in the shop window hoping against hope that someone will buy them and their salary. Then we have the 2 young lads in midfield who need to have a run out to see what they are capable of, on yesterday's showing both are a long way short of the fitness and pace required but this could come.
Michalik, Stelios and Wilhelmsson confirmed their status as bench players for the Premiership.Guthrie, Andy O'Brien and Al Habsi are all OK Premiership players. What however is the story with Nicky Hunt, Joey O'Brien and Megson?Hunt and O'Brien were playing closer and closer together and you could feel the ill feeling between them as they infringed each other's space.Hunt had a real ding-dong with Megson that ended after 4 exchanges with Hunt waving his hand dismissively at the manager and Megson shaking his head and making notes. 10 mins later Hunt was off but not before the goal came through his and Joey O'Brien's area.
Joey showed he is incapable of playing the Campo role and Hunt showed he is incapable of playing in the same team as Joey. Yesterday was never going to work as our play starts with the ball to the front man who either holds it up(Davies, Helgusson) or runs the channel for the pass(Anelka,Vaz Te). The squad need 2 new strikers(1 to replace Anelka) and 2 centre halves.Until and unless that is sorted we are going to have a very, very tough time keeping out of the bottom 3.

Newshound- thank you very much for kind comment. I dont mind any banter with fellow Wanderers.

Strange that Eric doen not dissociate himself from the foul mouthed bile and threats from his little red friend Zimmy. Selective sensitivities.

When I sign on here, I have to click on " Wanderers " Why then do Mancs of red or blue variety feel the need to post on here? I live 5 mins from the theatre of clowns, but have no interest at all in anything to do with their internal affairs/problems. I wouldnt even know where to find their chat sites.

Lost enthusiasm to watch cup matches on TV today, so going for a spend round Trafford Centre.Thought just for " Wanderers " discussion I would give my half season report on players:-

Jussi-6. Kept us in many games, but also cost a few with bad decision making. Kicking still awful. Not as worried as I was if he goes

Hunt-7. Had a mare yesterday. Wish our Managers were as quick to take off Nolan when he was having a mare, but Nicky has always been a whipping boy. Think he has been most consistent defender this season. Better distribution and crossing.

J O'Brien-2. This must be his twin back after injury. Awful, cant pass straight, doesnt want the ball, creates nothing, cant cross

Gardner-6. I like Ricky on a good day when looks one of best left backs in league. But when he's bad !!- no composure, overhit crosses, misplaced passes. Absolute mare at City.

A O'Brien-6. Surprised me as quite good, but no better than championship standard.

Meite- 3. Few job offers for him on Blackpool beach. Accident always waiting to happen. Cant clear properly, usually wrong side of his man.

Nolan- 4. I give him credit for a few decent games lately, but does not make up for other 50 where blatantly not a centre midfielder. Let down on pace, heading, tackling, passing and numerous petty bookings.

Guthrie- 7. Really good tight control, doesnt waste many passes. Weak at crossing and shooting on target.

Campo- 6. Started brightly on his return. Looks like fading again as happened second half last season.

Diouf- 6. Doesnt score enough, runs down too many blind alleys and far to many bookings. Plus side, we do look better with him.

Davies- 5. Would be 10 if based on effort/committment, but he is a striker. 1 goal?

Anelka- 7. Some great goals, but too often anonymous in games. Maybe we dont play to his strengths.

I do actually, but you must realise how deep an insult is that word. I would think better of you if your 'apology' wasn't so mealymouthed. It all started with my pro-Bolton supporter post. Not a dig just anger at the way you were treated yesterday.
We don't need your patronising "anger", just for you to keep your munich opinions away from our site and leave us to moan/ remenisce / slag off and sometimes praise OUR team, this forum is in the WANDERERS section.

As I am sure you can see we have enough anger amongst ourselves without some condescending munich b@st@rd patronising us.

Maybe change your name to praise Giggs, law Charlton etc and you may just have a bit more credibility.

Don't let anyone say that Bolton fans are fickle after all we have endured not only this season but over the last seasons too. Our FIRST TEAM played disgracefully in the league on Wednesday and our SECOND string disgraced the memory of the 58 team yesterday.Megson said all the teams he picks comprise Premiership quality players, well that may be true of their wage packets, but not of their passing, shooting or any other skills they lacked. If we have now seen all the players Bolton have on their books (who are old enough to play Premiership football,) then I do fear for our present and our future. Megson seems unable to get the best out of what we have got.We seemed not to have a game plan to follow.Sheffield had a team on the field whilst Wanderers had eleven players.
It is no secret or puzzle why gates are plumiting at the Reebok, the fans are being given nothing but drivel to watch and it is an insult. Something is badly wrong at the club and it wants sorting out quickly.
I will continue to go, but I will also state my displeasure at what is happening to the club I have supported since 1959.

As a Bolton fan and a human being - I am absolutely getting fed up of all the Munich jibes being banded about to the so-called UTD fans on this site. If they are constantly on this site, such as Eric, does it not make one assume that they are actully closet Bolton fans!!!! Then as such they are not the enemy. Also have you not heard of the catchphrase - keep your friends close but keep your enemies even closer.

If it had not been UTD involved in that tragic disaster 50 years ago and instead it was Bolton players do you think UTD would be doing what most ignorant posters do on this site and using the disaster as a mockery???? I think not!!! If Phil O'Donnell had been a UTD player instead of a otherwell player would you still be praising him????

Forget about all the mockery between the clubs and realise what Eric said is the truth!!!! If it had been anyone saying it would the person have got as much flack as Eric????? Again, I think not!!!!!

Stop the childish name-calling and accept that ANYONE can post on this site - it is not the OFFICIAL BWFC site but the local-paper that can be read by ANYONE!!!

Once more everyone who posts on here are either true supporters or closet supporters and as such there is no-one to name call (isn't name-calling for primary school children, anyway, and is the dangerous form of bullying and possible racism!!!)

After mulling over my thoughts on a game that so disappointed me yesterday I had a flash this morning! What if Megson had deliberately chosen that team to show to the board what a pathetic squad we actually have in order to give him ammunition to buy better class players to replace the championship quality squad members? Have just seen reports of our being linked with Cisse AND Saviola. Now you can't call that "no ambition". Maybe the ginger one has done a double bluff?

By the way, I deplore the use of the M word but you have apologised Julie. I remember the time and the news broadcasts so well and all fans from all clubs were devastated I can assure you. However I usually agree with your comments on the players and agree with the ones above too. It is just the moaning that gets us down. Criticism with your ideas for a fix are fine. Happy New Year to all Wanderers fans everywhere. Come on you Whites - onwards and upwards PLEASE!!!

You should be ashamed for name-calling - especially from the 1958 disaster. It is pathetic, ignorant and most importantly it offends the family and friends of the people who died in that disaster.

Are you child or are you a grown up - either way name-calling is BULLYING and bullying, if I remember here, is illegal!!!!

My Grandad tells me about something called the Burnden disaster in the 1940s where I believe more people lost their lives than in the Munich air disaster.

Can you imagine had I been constantly on a Man U site, rubbishing their fans, players, finances, management etc, then suddenly I had appealed to their better judgement for sympathy and kind words at the Burnded Anniversary. I was wrong last night, a slip which I regret. The point is, if these reds did not keep coming on a Wanderers site trying to wind us up, spreading their bile, the discussion would still have been on BWFC matters.

I know I moan a lot, has been said before. Just waiting for my partner to get in from his Sunday league match, then he is taking me for lunch and shopping. He doesnt know yet, so that will be a nice surprise for him.

Amosc99 if you were to read some of the non-football related threads on this website you would see that by the biggest culprit of bullying is King Eric.

He constantly insults BWFC and the people of Bolton, yet when anybody retaliates by mentioning the 1958 disaster he starts whingeing like there is no tomorrow.

I will be the first to admit that I hate MUFC and anyone associated with them, but in our society we are forced to tolerate them.
However, I will not allow King Eric to insult BWFC, the town of Bolton or myself without retaliating.

If he is so sensitive about the 1958 disaster
then perhaps he should remember that

agree with you about the sheff u fans. they were "the atmosphere".

however braaten to me was the only player that showed any desire i thought. never seen him play a full game before and thought he ran his socks off for the whole 90 minutes and showed intelligent running as well as good touches.

guthrie had a reasonable game. stelios tried hard as ever but as happens at least 50 per cent of the time nothing comes of it. thought cohen showed some interesting flashes. maybe - just maybe he could be the natural replacement for speed and campo.

speaking of which: hoped speed might say goodbye yesterday. disappointing unless it was before i arrived (2.45).

at times it felt like nine individuals defending individually with braaten up front and al habsi, who did ok apart from the goal, stranded.

How would you react if anyone mentioned the Burnden disaster??? I would expect in the same manner - its natural to put up a defence against something one belives or partially believes in!!!!

What is there to hate about MUFC? Its a football club that's it. They do no harm to you and vice versa so why HATE them???

I have read and been on the receiiving end of many of Eric's posts (under numerous of my psuedomyns) - but to continually attack someone over a disaster where people died, where people lost their friends and family - I'm sorry but that is just totally intolerable. To me that is much worse than bullying.

Julie:

Burnden Park was also the scene of the Burnden Park Disaster. On 9 March 1946, crowd congestion led to 33 Bolton Wanderers F.C. spectators losing their lives through asphyxiation and hundreds suffering injuries in a crowd estimated to be in excess of 85,000 people, whilst watching their team take on Stoke City F.C. in the Sixth Round second-leg of the FA Cup . In terms of scale it was the worst disaster to hit British football stadia until the Ibrox disaster in 1971.

The disaster led to the Moelwyn Hughes's official report, which recommended limitations on crowd sizes.

Amosc99 I do not go on any MUFC website and try to provoke their fans, so there is no reason for them to mention the Burnden disaster to me.

Perhaps you are too young to realise that when BWFC were travelling back from Wembley after winning the cup in 1958 the team coach was stoned by MUFC fans in Salford. For that reason alone I will hate MUFC until the day I die, quite apart from having MUFC rammed down my throat everytime I switch on the TV or pick up a newspaper. Before you suggest that I am jealous of their success I would like to say that I have nothing but respect for Liverpool FC, who have won far more than MUFC.

I really do not see why Eric should come on this website at all. So as I said above,

THIS IS NOT the BWFC website it is the Bolton News website which is open to everyone - just as much as anyone can leave a message on the MEN website etc.

If this was the official Bolton Wanderers website then I would have no problems in people having a go at Eric et al. But it isn't. This is an OPEN forum with a biase towards Bolton Wanderers but still allows other to leave comments.

It's like saying I should be banned from the forum because :-
1. I live overseas
2. Apart from Bolton, I also support Crewe, Notts County and Ajax
3. an't see the point of badger-baiting Utd fans anymore becuase its dull boring and gets you nowhere - except for a possible criminal record!

How many impressionable young adults (i.e. 9 to 15 ) read these comments and how many you so-called adults would actually be ashamed to hear children come out with what you write on here. It furthers the antagonism on here?

I am a true Bolton fan and as such apart from the so-called incident that happened after we won the 1958 FA up why is there so much hatred between the two clubs - how did it all begin and why does it still continue today? I have NEVER stated that I feel that there is no bad feeling between the two clubs its just that ManU fans gave up the ghost (sensibly) years ago!!!!TBH who was actually in the wrong for starting the celebration tour in SALFORD (the heart of MUFC fanbase) - BWFC or not???? We have only ourselves to blame!!!

It demonstrates that money is all - the Cup is now a subsidiary competition opposed to the money earned by staying in the Prem.

Shame on you Gartside and your pursuit of money

This was the original post. A post completely pro BWFC fans and anti the way you were treated. Not a wind up, not anti BWFC...just anti the money men ruining our game.

In Bolton, how many people support Bury, Utd, City, Wigan, Bolton, Arsenal, Chelsea. The town is not exclusively lived in by Bolton fans, so why should the BN forum be exclusive to Bolton fans. Do not forget Bolton is a minority club compared to ity or Utd whose fans base is at least 3 times ours.

You can easily post on the MEN (which is open to ALL clubs, just like the BN), Bury Times, Lancashire Post etc... Why should the BN be any different? If it was then it would be discriminating - which a the media is not meant to be (excluding BBC of course!!! :-) )

Sat in a beer keller in munich in november with some bayern fans havin several beers and a good time. A small group of bolton fans singing about munich bas****s got the bayern fans a little uncomfortable. We explained that it was not about the people of munich, but they were still confused because the people who were singing were in their late teens or early twenties. Even their parents would struggle to remember 1958. Perhaps its time to move on. If you hate Man U then its better to use the term Red Scum. It sums them up well and does not confuse the friendly people from munich where we had such a brilliant time.

Anyway, back to the game. Whoever wears the shirt should be capable of playing at the right level. Most either couldn't or wouldn't. Megson should get rid of those that can't and fine those that had the ability but took the pi** out of the fans by not trying. Yesterday was a disgrace. The manager picked a team from the bolton squad of professional footballers. They should have worked their bollo**s off to get the job done.
