Wanderers today completed the signing of Matt Taylor for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £4million.

The 26-year-old former England Under-21 international completed his move from Portsmouth after undergoing a medical at the Reebok Stadium.

The deal brings to an end Gary Megson's lengthy pursuit of the versatile left-side player who can operate either at left back or in midfield.

Wanderers agreed a fee for the player at the start of the transfer window but had to wait for Pompey boss Harry Redknapp to sanction the move as he wanted to bring new players to Fratton Park first.

Taylor has signed a three and a half-year deal.

Very pleased with this signing. Good strong England player with a superb left peg!!!!

Hope he plays as a left sided midfielder as Harry Rednap played him at Pompey.

Two good solid young signings so far...keep up the good work Mego!!!

Melberg would be the ideal CB we need and then get Defoe or Bent on loan for the rest of the season with the chance to buy if we stay up.

Rumours yesterday that he was spotted at Euxton were true then. Good post whoever that was !

We have done well to beat others to his signature, but I'm still not sure about him. Rednapp is no mug. If this guy was that good he would have been a regular in the Pompey team. Been on the Pompey fanzone and the reviews about him are mixed. I hope I'm worrying about nothing because 4 million is a lot of money. We have never spent like this before and we need to get value because if we go down we wont get this sort of cash again.

Cahill from Villa and Gomis from Saint Ettienne and it will have been a good January !!

Great signing. God we might even have someone with a left foot taking our right sided corners! And he can shoot - must be the first player who can shoot on target since Frandsen and Jensen. Remember when we used to get free kicks and the goalkeeper was actually tested?

What planet are you on Chris, this guy is a quality full back who can play further up the field too. He brings quality to our side. Well done Megson, im impressed. Last week it was reported other teams were in for this guy, then I thought we have no chance then, but to my suprise Bolton Wanderers have come up trumps. All we need now is a quality midfielder who has a good engine on him who can from box to box like Roy Keane used to. Not to mention a out and out striker is needed, desperately. Come on Megson & Bolton Board get your money spent on a good un!!

There are people on our website that dont rate Guthrie, so it just goes to show you have to make your own mind up. Pompey have a load of midfielders and I guess Muntari (£8mil) is the reason Taylor doesnt play. No disgrace in that.

The on player keeping Taylor out was Nico Krancjar who cant help but score for fun on the left.
Harry did not want Matty to go but he wants first team football and not playing second fiddle to Krancjar.

I am referring to the fee, which I believe is £2m more than we should have spent.

Premiership experience is important, but I would have rather we covered centre forward and centre half first, then other positions.

A step in the right direction - I know we are loaded with midfielders but very few of them are up to scratch and will be offloaded I'm sure in the summer if not earlier (Wilhemsson, Braaten possible loan, Campo possibly on his way out, Nolan not up to it etc). I think he'll hopefully be played in midfield rather than in defence where he will be cover for Gardner who I'd still prefer at left back despite his failings. Unlike some of our past signings like Samuel, McCann, Alonso, Helguson, O'Brien I'm a lot less underwhelmed by this one. Fresh faces alone will liven up the squad a bit if they're half decent. We need a minimum of two other players and I would prefer three - a centre back, a creative mid, and at least one quality striker. £4 million is a lot of money for Bolton but fans can't complain when we splash the cash when we've been crying out for it to happen. Lets face it - £4 million is pretty much the minimum for a half decent Premier league player, especially if he's English as they are always at a premium.

If so it looks like we could potentially have a good squad for the remainder of the season. I hope that these recent movements will stop the incessant abuse being aimed at Gartside who I personally believe has done a marvelous job with Bolton over the last 10 years. Agree, 4 million sounds a lot but in reality its just the going rate. If truth be told in the current climate Im surprised the fee wasnt closer to 6mill. as everyone will be aware the price for good young english players is always higher due to lack (sadly) of available talent.

I don't want to get into the whole Gartside argument here again but I think that the club was successful largely because of Allardyce and it was inspite of Gartside's tenure rather than because of him. Gartside had a good manager rather than Bolton having a decent chairman. Steinsson and Taylor are two positive signings - lets see at least two more. As much as we need to be ambitious players like Diarra and Defoe won't come to teams like Bolton as long as we are in our current mess and Defoe probably wouldn't even leave London given he thinks he's a celebrity.

Wrong the Club was largely successful because of RIOCH. Him pulling consistent crowds of 18,000 plus at every home match and cup match.

Without RIOCH the REEBOK would have never existed.

why was other clubs intrested in matt taylor ... he's got to be some use and when ive seen portsmouth , he didnt look crap and like ive said scored some cracking goals , sometimes if your form dips you get put on the bench or over looked if the palyers that come in are on form in your position , doesnt make him any less of a player , plus ya never know why players leave a club

Totally agree. Hey Julie, what do you make of this then?

I think it should shake things up a bit in midfield, as I know nothing really about the steinnson bloke apart from what I have heard on here then this signing is going back to Sams era where we would only side if it improves the team or is better than what we have. I think this guy is both of the above.

Hope the Icelander can play well in centre defence, otherwise Owen and Viduka against O'Brien and Mich.

Got to say "scoring for fun" is a bit of an exaggeration. Have they scored at home yet?
If we'd scored as few as Pompey have at home Megson would be even less popular than he is now. I know this is going off the thread a bit, but having watched Pompey a few times on the box, they look no better than us, maybe just a bit tighter at the back (except when we needed them to do us a favour at Sunderland of course). There are a load of clubs up there like Pompey, Villa, City who are so average - like us last season, getting a win every 2 or 3 games, but really very very average. City are my tip for taking a fall, how overrated and lucky has Sven been this season?

I might not go as far as Big Fat Sam's post but all I've seen is a couple of wonder goals over the last couple of years. Why isn't he in the Portsmouth team? Is it a fall out with Redknapp or is it because he's not good enough? What do Portsmouth fans think? I'm not slagging the lad off and I hope he slots in and does a great job. MATT TAYLOR has completed his move to Bolton.
The left-sided player sealed a £3.5m switch to the Reebok Stadium on a three-and-a-half year contract.

The deal has been in the offing for some time but Pompey were not keen to let the player go until they had boosted their own squad.

That happened earlier today when they landed Lassana Diarra from Arsenal in a £5m move.

Pompey fans will be sad to see the 26-year-old head north to the Reebok Stadium.

Taylor became a big fans' favourite after arriving from Luton for £750,000 in 2002.

He scored 29 goals in 203 appearances, including crucial strikes during Pompey's Great Escape from relegation two seasons ago.

Very good signing, works hard and is a quality striker of the ball as well. Bog entry from Setanta Sports that he wrote on signing for Bolton.

"Bolton made me feel very welcome, the manager was very welcoming, and the key thing was he wanted me.
Football club wise, as soon as I went up there I had a gut feeling it was what I wanted. The Reebok was where I wanted to play.
Gary Megson just showed that he wanted me, that’s a fantastic feeling. That’s not to say the other clubs didn’t also show that, but Bolton was right for me. The club, the way they conduct themselves and treat their players is fantastic, and Gary was integral to that.
I had a chat with Roy Keane at Sunderland, and let me make this clear it was not an easy decision. Sunderland were very accommodating, it’s a great club and I want to thank Roy publicly for his time. The main aim at Bolton initially has to be maintaining our Premier League status, and I would like to think I bring experience as I’ve been in a similar position with Portsmouth in the past.
Hopefully I can repay the manager for the money he has spent on me. I hope to start doing that as soon as possible. I believe this is a very good decision in my career. I’d like to comment on the great rapport I had with the Pompey fans, it’s been difficult to leave, but everyone knows I love playing football. I gave my all for Pompey, and the fans gave their all for me. I had fantastic times at Fratton Park, but at this time in my career I’ve just got to get back to doing what I love on a Saturday afternoon.

We need a good centre half, holding midfielder and at least 2 strikers.
I'd like to see Melberg from Villa and Gardner from spurs. Sidwell from Chelsea, Kezman, Lita, Roberts, venegoor of hesellink, Martins, Owen, Defoe, any 2 from them plus the french Gosim.
Wouldn't touch Bent or Nugent with someone elses barge pole never mind my own.

Not bitter, maybe a bit cynical, not hostile nor negative, and no apologies needed for basing predictions on club history. Bolton have a long history of selling the fans short, and older fans know all about that.
What the club has started to do now is what it should have been doing over the last 2 years - judicious team/squad strengthening. If it had done that at the right times, we wouldn't have been in this trouble now.
I'm half-raising my hat to ED/PG and GM for getting in two useful experienced versatile players for reasonable fees. I'll raise my hat entirely when the solid organising centre-back, creative midfielder, and pacy striker are on board - hopefully by the 31st January.

Good post and one I agree with, the creative midfielder might just be Dzmalli, but I have not seen the lad play yet, but the other point of a pacy striker is paramount for me, the most important position we must fill, that along with an experienced and strong centre half that is, the Megson jigsaw is starting to come together and with only 14 days left, then we can only watch and hope Megson gets his men in on time to complete the jigsaw.

Pompey spent £30m last summer to add to previous big signings, and are spending more milliona now. Taylor has been pushed back by signings such as Muntari & Kranjcar - as someone else said, not a big disgrace and doesn't mean he'll not be a useful player for us.

Not sure where his best position is. Hope the Icelander can play well in centre defence, otherwise Owen and Viduka against O'Brien and Mich.
Rumour on "news now" is that Michelik is on his way to Leeds for 300K. I hope its not true. I wouldn't mind him going there on loan if we get another good CB. But I still believe he will get better the more he plays.

I wasn't too sure about Taylor at first. (Not good enough for Pompey etc etc). But reading some posts on here about who he was up against for places, then reading some more posts on Pompey fanzone it seems the majority want him to stay. I would like to see him at left back with Ricky using his pace in midfield. I am sure his crossing will improve if he gets a good run there.

I know you are doubtful about Saturday, but if we attack their midfield and don't let them come at us, then we can do them. If we go with the view that Keegan is some kind of god and sit back crappin ourselves, then we will get turned over no matter who we have in defence.

At 2 million and in the summer, i would say this is a great signing. 4 Million in January, when he hasn't played all season, is desperate to say the least. Can you honestly say he's worth 4 million?????

So he arrives not match fit, and as for his 30 yard screamers, he's got to find his range, so probably no goals till April, that's providing he plays all games and doesn't get knee knack, which you can't rule out when player goes from 0 to 80mph.

Two questions......
1. Will Matt Taylor be match fit for Saturday?
2. If we are still not yet spending money from the Anelka sale then why wasn't Big Sam given this money last January?

Good signings so far - need to see them play the Bolton way before I make an overall comment (but I bet they are thrown in this Saturday without an ounce of being able to play the Bolton way - partnerships, passes, etc.... - this would be a bad move, I would rather lose this weekend then suffer the indignity of buying new players, putting them straight in the team and still lose and then everyone on here exclaim that they were actually bad buys!!!!)

Still not convinced of Megson - although the signings are a step in the right direction - but how will he use these signings?

I agree and the point i was making is the better ones cost a lot of money. The problem is that it doesnt matter if we bid for the above and get told where to go,we might as well stay realistic and get someone worthwhile as surely Gartslimes pot of gold hasnt got much more in it ( that he is willing to part with i mean) The two signings this week are quality players and will helpour defence and Taylor will create as wellwhich is what we are lacking. Presumably Roberts has been fresh every **** time we've played against him then! 1 of those players, like Koumas, Viduka and Bentley that has never had a bad game when I've seen him, and I'm going back 5 years plus. Agree with the poster who said that we need to beef up the team. Seems that the majority of teams in the Prem. are mixing more brawn and hight with their play-makers and strikers. Stylios and Guthrie were dwarfed by Rovers back line and other Bolton players seemed so light weight. Our new Ice Man
looks like he will be able to make his presence felt, but we need some attackers who won't be easily knocked off the ball and defenders who will unnerve the opposition. Most teams who have come to the Reebok this season have all looked bigger than us.Wilhelmson is typical of what I mean. We have to go to the EU for a striker. Proven premiership goalscorers of real quality cost 10 million plus. We can buy a striker who cannot make the grade with another club for 5 million. Roberts and Lita are poor replacements for the quality we had. Lets not settle for second best. There are good srtikers out there with unfashionable EU clubs.

Megson said he had scouts out there. We can pay better wages than many of these clubs and offer them the shop window of the premiership. I would rather gamble on a young prospect with pace, skill and ambition than settle for an ageing reject where who will lose us a fortune if he can't do the job.

megsons done well so far in the window, its not his fault we sold anelka, its gartsides, but we've got decent money for him, gutted to see him in a chelsea shirt tho. we desperatly need a centre back and a goal scorer. gary cahill is in talks with birmingham over a possible loan, i hope we dont miss out on him !

I dont doubt that Roberts has got faults and I would agree with anyone that says he doesnt score enough goals, but I cannot think of another striker that works harder up front (I am not counting Davies as most of his hard work is done in a defensive, not attacking, role). Roberts runs his socks off and is a nightmare to defend against. Well worth a couple of million whether or not we sign another striker. I would settle for Lita as there would be no settling in period if we buy English.

Jon W i had Lita next on my list, Understand the comments you make on Roberts but all i'm saying is not a true replacement for Anelka but if indeed we get a chance of bringing TWO strikers in then the two you name......not bad i'd have a bit of that!!! Can we get them in for Saturday??? Our bench doesn't look tough enough without Striker's!!!!

Good signing for us - hoping to see Matty fire off a couple of screamers on Saturday and wipe the smiles off the faces up here. In terms of strikers, we need a senior guy, but in addition, Matty Fryatt's worth a look - Megson started to play him again at Leicester, and he's been out of favour since the ginger one left. England U21 player, and kept out some of the "big names" - could be a bargain buy?

Andy, Staffordshire says...

2 days ago Megson was "rubbish" for not having signed anyone.2 days later and 2 players added its "not enough" and "we need a striker". Give the guy until the end of January then judge him.

How about giving Haransyi a run out this weekend if we're short on strikers. I haven't got to see the lad play being over here but many ardent supporters have given glowing reports.

Love the Taylor signing by the way

yeah it would be nice to give harsanyi a go, but i suppose megson would argue this isnt the time to be testing untried players at this level. although we at least need to stick a striker on the bench instead of 3 defenders!

Good point about having more on attackers the bench but if this isn't the right time with the loss of Anelka and Diouffy at the Cup of Nations . . . then when is?

Wasn't Steinsson supposed to be cover at center back. I know he is primarily a right side back but I thought he could do both and in fact preferred the middle or am I mistaken?
I'm with you though dandan, lets get off Megson's back and see what he does with the new talent

I would rather gamble on a young prospect with pace, skill and ambition than settle for an ageing reject where who will lose us a fortune if he can't do the job.
what do you mean by if we have to go to the EU - the UK IS IN the EU!!!!!

I find it puzzling that with the current lack of strikers available to us Megson didnt even put Bratten on the bench, but had 2 defenders who were never going to come on. I still dont understand why everyone has decided Bratten is no good, if anyone had watched our last few games and no others, we would think Davies, Nolan, Joey O'B, Jussi & Wilhemson werent cut out for the Premiership - too slow, lightweight, overweight, take your pick. Yet only Bratten and Alonso seem to be judged by these standards. Bratten has still produced 1 of the moments of the season for me, a 50 yard run at Birmingham that the rest of the team could only dream about doing, because he's the ONLY player we've got that possesses both strength and pace. I'm not saying he should be starting, but if he we have no strikers on the bench again I will be seriously brassed off, because you can guarantee we'll be trailing with 20 minutes left as with every away match.

The striker situation baffles me we have an England under 19 player who can catch pigeons yet he is not worthy of a spot on the bench neither is The reserve striker or the two players who are coming back from injury namely Vaz Te & Helgerson who both came through 90 Min's in a behind close doors match early last week. Why are we so negative that we need all the defenders on the bench as they will not change a game in any way shape or form. The logic tells me that we need to be more positive and go for it as we cannot defend the nil because when it goes against you there is no possibility of changing the outcome with surplus defenders.

It makes me laugh when people come on here suggesting this player and that player from overseas leagues (Elmander, some Russian from Seville, some bloke from St Etienne). You can't have any real knowledge about them as a player other than You Tube clips or some statistics. Other people need to get real Crouch, Defoe, Johnson and players like that will not come to Bolton in our current position and probably wouldn't anyway (could Blackburn sign them? And they are well up the table) plus we couldn't afford the transfer fee. The Leroy Lita's of this world are more realistic targets.

Deano, Bolton says...
10:40am Fri 18 Jan 08

I suggested Marek Mintal from nurenberg and by no means is he out of our league and his record speaks for it's self, nearly a goal per game in bundesliga.
We need a proven striker and Lita has not been proven by any means, ok he's quick and strong but if he can't get in Readings team then i'm not being funny but he's no replacement for Anelka

Deano, Bolton says...

Ben the Beast, Methil says...

I'm not claiming Lita is the answer or that he's any good but we will not get anybody who is close to Anelka in terms of class or ability. Also look at the lack of patience shown to some of our recent foreign signings Braatan, Wilhelmsson, Cid. They might not have impressed but they've not had chance to settle in or have a decent run in the team because of the managerial situation and our poor league positon.

McFadden is a great example of how over priced players are in January. Makes sense for Birm to sign him as McLeish got lots out of him for the Jocks. Even Lita would cost a few million because Reading know we are desperate. When is Helguson back?
