Whites may miss out on defensive targets

GARY Megson's persuasive powers could be tested to the limit if he pursues his interest in Aston Villa defensive duo, Gary Cahill and Olof Mellberg.

The Wanderers boss appeared to be dealt a double blow yesterday when Villa boss, Martin O'Neill, revealed he had rejected a number of offers for 22-year-old Cahill, while Juventus revealed they were close to agreeing a pre-contract deal with Mellberg.

Although Megson has not confirmed an interest in either player, Wanderers are understood to have made a bold attempt to hi-jack Mellberg's proposed move to Italy and tabled a bid for Cahill, the young centre-back Sammy Lee tried to sign just before the August transfer deadline.

With the January window closing in eight days, the rumour mill is hotting up with Wanderers linked with a range of players, based at home and abroad.

Come on Bolton, before it's too late, lets get what we need to finish the season in the Prem without a nailbite finish (or worse).

Cahill - achieved nothing in his career (far too risky for the figures mentioned).

bizarre, all the stats show we have just about the best defensive record of the teams around us and yet we're still trying to sign defenders when its blindingly obvious the problem is at the other end.....anybody know the record for the lowest number of goals scored for a team to be relegated third from bottom ?

A striker and a centre back must come in in the next week or we are relegated it's a s simple as that. I will maintain that we did not need to sell Anelka now and the difficluty in getting in overpriced replacements is only convincing me more. How a club can leave itself in this position I don't know (only 1 striker and 1 proper centreback). Not the behaviour of a professional outfit. The stupidity of it is astounding.
Once again, a striker & centre back in the next 8 days or we're relegated no question. Pull your finger out Gartside (the chairman who is the perfect embodyment of the businessmen chairman who makes stupid decisions because he has no real football knowledge - his epitaph may well read Appointed Lee, sold Anelka, got the boot after relegation).

10:04am Wed 23 Jan 08

Well said Andy. We go through this every year - the fact we have money to spend this time around has probably made things even more prolonged and difficult. Let's face it there are perhaps a dozen teams who want Cahill and Mellberg so it's not just a case of faxing an offer and then expecting a 'yes' or a 'no' a few hours later. The players (and their agents) are deliberately sitting back and waiting because they know they hold the cards these days...not the football clubs! If we wanted dross like Amdy Faye we could get him very easily...but to buy in a good player who is being courted by several other clubs it takes patience which is why so many deals are done in the last couple of days of the window...not the first couple.

I can see it now. The transfer window closes and Bolton fail to spend any more of the Anelka money. Most fans are annoyed and frustrated and along comes Jon to remind all and sundry that Davies has invested nearly £20 million in his 7 years since taking control. However, how much of this nearly £20M is for the purchase of shares as opposed to Davies actually loaning/ giving money from his personal fortune. If only our beneficiary??? was also a supporter!!!!

Phones are not that good when it comes to transfer talk etc... Megson et al should be over here doing the deals in person, sorting out the importance of what we need, talking to select parties about the transfers rather than sunning it and not, basically, doing nothing for best part of week except for getting the team unfit!!!!

Why isnt Moore good enough. Do you think we have anyone at the club who is better in that position. Davies, Vaz Te, Helgusson adn Harsanyi. Are these quicker, will these worry defenses, will they get behind the opposition. No, we need two forwards but one has to have pace. There arent many available as quick as him for that price. He isnt poor, Villa have two very good strikers ahead of him, an even faster one and a big man, we have the big man, it makes perfgect sense to get him in now.

If we go for a foreigner we will have to wait 2-3 months for them to settle, we dont have the time to waste.

Mark: i understand what your saying however this season everything changed. When Billionaire owners take over clubs like Villa, West Ham, Man City, suddenly all the gradual build up over the past 5 years get wiped out overnight. Unfortunately 11th is about the best we can hope for until we either join the billionaires or the foreign owners get bored and destroy the clubs that have sold out. The 'reserves' from the team who were mid table last year are the player we need as they have already proven they can perform at this average level. Its the reality of the game and throwing 9 million on unproven swedish srikers from the french league is an unproven risk were as less money on a premiership sriker seems like much safer business.

He was good first time round, then failed miserably at Blackburn and was left out of a squad of 16 for the cup final, going with Crouch, beatie and omerod. He was released by strachan for free, i wouldnt describe this as immense.

Also moores scoring record, how many of those caps has he played 90 minutes - about 5%. What was diouf record at Liverpool. 3 goals in 45 appearences. It isnt necessarily all about finding a replacement for Anelkas goals, if there was another available 20 goal a season man, than Chelsea would have signed him. but in their final season, or couple of season's for their last clubs - they were either stuck on the bench, stuck in reserves, etc...

Their careers were/are excellent but look at the facts as to how and why they came to Bolton!

Then as Aidan says, look at today's football world and then look at the players in the 2nd 11 etc - ones who were comannding places only last season and season before - exactly same situation as to most of the players who came here under Big Sam!

I agree we need pace, but whether Megson would want to use it is another matter. He prefers Davies, Nolan, Campo, O'Brien & McCann over Stelios, Wilhemson, Andranik & Bratten. I am more concerned with how our manager wants to play the game than who he signs in the transfer window. I would settle for keeping the current squad if I could pick the team instead of him! (And by the way I'm not suggesting all those slow players shouldnt be in the team, or that all the fast players should be, but a mix and match may just help us launch an attack or 2).

Bolton are being linked with a £3million swoop for St Etienne striker Pascal Feindouno as a replacement for Nicolas Anelka
Trotters boss Gary Megson has the £15million raised from the sale of Anelka to Chelsea burning a hole in his pocket and it seems as though some of it could go on African ace Feindouno.

The 26-year-old is currently with Guinea at the African Nations Cup in Ghana and according to reports Megson has sent an agent and chief scout Colin Harvey over to Africa to wrap up a deal.

Megson is still waiting to hear whether he has been successful with the two offers that have gone in for unnamed Premiership players, but is casting his net far and wide in the meantime

Bolton are said to be showing an interest in Rangers midfielder Brahim Hemdani who is valued at £2million.

Hemdani, who was voted Rangers player of the season during the last campaign, still has 18 months to run on his current deal and the Gers would be reluctant to let him move on.

Gary Megson wants a new defender and striker before the window closes but it looks as though he wants to strengthen his midfield as well with 26-year-old Hemdani the target.

The Frenchman has been in fine form again this season and Megson may have a job on persuading Rangers to let him go

We have Kevin Davies who is the only fit striker at the moment, going to be at least another month before the other two are match fit, Diouf will be back in about a month unless he gets injured. So heres my problem why the flip is Megson looking at defenders or defence midfielders and not bidding for attacking players, Baros is available on loan so are a bunch of others but i have read no reports of us being link with any forward thinking players, is it because we are a backward thinking club. Please help my head hurts

All those panicing because the team are in Spain, well I agree that there is cause for concern if they return and play badly (as they often do- I mean as a result of sunning it abroad)- but who is to say that Megson is out there with them? Knox may be doing the training. BWSA have the promise that if he is not tied up in transfer negotiations, Megson and the management team will be attending the BWSA social evening tomorrow night (Thursday)in the Wanderers Suite at the Reebok to take questions from the members. However I'm not holding my breath, but if they can't come someone representing the club will definitely be there. I'm going as sometimes things work out as promised.
Meeting stsrts at 8 o'clock.

I'm sure people do not realise the cost of the playing staff in wages and fees . If for example we signed a player for 10 mill and put him on a 4 year contract for 60K per week that would cost us a total of 22.5mill (inc transfer fee) for the whole package and thats just one player!!!

22.5Million Pounds for ONE player. Theres not many teams can afford that. We will therefore be looking at the lower end of the market like most other prem clubs, barring the usual suspects that is.

Toto Tamuz of Beitar Jerusalem is a strong possibility for Megson. A cheap striker who might just shine is a low risk option when relegation can not be ruled out. Forget big money signings - they aren't going to happen.

The outcome against Fulham on Tuesday will give a very strong steer as to where we are really headed. Only a win will indicate a strong probability of survival...but that means that we've got to score.

Breezeblock,
Having a social, ie getting together with other Bolton fans is one of the functions of BWSA. It also gives members the oportunity to meet players off the field and also to put questions to the management team. Committee members also have meetings with Club officials to put questions and members' concerns to them.
Bolton fans come onto this website to voice ideas and opinions, but moan that the club doesn't read them. Well why not join BWSA and attend meetings and have your voice heard officially. People moan that BWSA isn't active enough, well when 90 percent of the Reebok don't bother to join them and be active fans(prefering to moan on websites in the comfort of their homes,) then how can BWSA have any real clout with the club? In numbers there is power. Numbers have fallen at the association, but equally at the Reebok. The main danger to the survival of Bolton Wanderers is not the team or the board, but the lethargy of the supporters. Some are still passionate, but these are in the minority. If fans care they need to show it in their actions-getting off their bums and doing something about it. Look how low Spurs were in the league before Christmas, but what passion the fans have shown. They didn't stop going in the bad times and what a fantastic night they had last night against the gunners. It was spurs who did the shooting, and their fans were superb. If we could just create a small percentage of that atmosphere at the Reebok there would be some chance of survival. We have had just cause to be disappointed recently, but now that the board have lowered the price of the Euro game and are trying to get players in, for goodness sake stop finding more and more excuses for not attending games and giving "live support" (Television fans don't count). Give your support now or don't moan and blame others if we get relegated!!!!!!!

You are right, even with the club putting prices down to a FIVER, people are still making excuses as to why they arent going. Before it was the expence, but now the price is low it will just be something else to moan about. SKY SPORTS

Gerald Cid has expressed his relief at securing a move to Nice from Premier League side Bolton.

The French defender returned to his homeland last week after a disappointing spell at the Reebok Stadium.

Cid made only 14 appearances for the Trotters during his stint at the club and admits that he is happy to have left as he felt there was no chance of him ever improving his game while in England.

Disappointment

"Bolton remains a disappointment," he told L'Equipe.

"Otherwise I would not have decided to leave.

"Some people have told me that I was mad to leave, but I could not see myself remaining on the bench or playing on the left for several more months.

"As soon as I knew the door was open to go I did not need to give it much thought.

Energy

"I feel as though I worked less during training sessions than I ever did in France.

"We kept all of our energy for the matches. We would have a long warm-up, small games, but often every day was the same.

"To me training sessions are important if you want to improve, and that was not going to happen."

Martin, you are answering your own questions here, what I mean by Gartside delivering is only what Gartside has said he will do, which so far is all lies (bad track record as well), as supporters we are yet again being led down the merry path.

Quotes from Gartside:
We have plans in place to cover every position in the team.

We have a healthy transfer fund for the January transfer window, without selling anyone.

Gartside announces around £5m to spend.

Gartside admitted that all the Anelka transfer money will be available to Gary Megson.

So with just over a week to go in the transfer market Martin , who else is to blame for not buying players when it is he who so readily sells them. All Gartside says to Gary megson is that the finance package is too much every time Megson chooses a player.

All of the talk on here about the club's financial position is very interesting. It would, of course, help if the club just decided to tell us - we wouldn't then have to rely on qualified people, who also happen to be Bolton fans, reading the accounts and keeping us up to date via this forum.

One thing is for certain, not attending matches and carping from the sidelines will not help the club's finances. Everyone appreciates that Messrs Gartside and Davies have kept a tight hold on the purse strings and should have invested more sooner. However, the Championship is full of clubs whose fans could say the same thing - and they seem to be still getting 20,000 plus attendances while we have just finished 8,6,8,7 in the Prem and, the minute things go against us, people run for the mountains. It's just plain fickle and it reflects very poorly on the town.

Brown would be awesome - but I can't see it. Apart from Cahill I can't really pick out any central defenders at other Prem clubs who are on the fringes but good enough to come in and be a front line player for us. I think we need to be looking abroad - Van Buyten (Bayern), Olsson (NEC Nijmegen), Rodriguez (Braga) were all tenuously linked earlier in the window. Meite needs to go the same way as Cid - now!

Fulham have four strikers for their visit to Bolton next Tuesday so I can see our defence will be busy. Fulham have not won away from home,so will have all guns blazing trying to prove something to their new manager. In the meantime we are still searching for a striker and I hope we sign one before Tuesday to give Kevin Davies the help he needs and help us get 3 points we badly need. COME ON YOU WHITES

he's not bad sometimes but he does seriously make some titus bramble type errors sometimes...
imagine if we had bramble, cid and darren moore in the same defence!!!!!

Brownie, so if the BWSA had more members what would change? Let's say the membership went to 3,000...would it still just be a glorified social club?

please explain this to me then, why does gartside sign off the refreshment counters to de veres???

I suppose we all view it through different eyes but to me Meite is utterly clueless. He makes absolutely basic errors and lacks all of the attributes required in his (crucial) position. He can't read the game, he is mediocre in the air, he has little pace, he is clumsy in the challenge and is prone to switching off. You can have the best strikers in the world but if you've got a liability at centre back it counts for little. Sorry - I sound like Alan Hansen!

I have just taken an age to read all those argumentative comments n finance, however at one point i think i slipped into a parrellel universe, as i believe i saw more than one person suggesting we spend money on WES BROWN! I didnt realise he was a professional footballer, i thought the orange umpalumpa was a jester employed to entertain the crowd by catching the ball on his bright orange face.

However Marlon King i think is a middle of the road safe option. He is fast, can score goals, has something to prove at this level, not too much money, plus Fulham and Sunderland have just both bought strikers in the last couple of hours. Yeh i would take him. But still i will continue to push for Luke Moore as well. Purely as an impact player, i keep getting stick for suggesting it, however if i had said Jason Roberts 3 weeks ago it would have been alot more laughable. Rubbish at Wigan, even worse at WBA, one good 15 minute display against us and over night he turns into a world beater.

Nailed on we are one of them . Average to Good player but hardly Anelka is he ?

have not got him yet though gareth B from chorley mate - i have a hunch this is the player we are after and i agree with aidan of sheffield, he would not be a bad signing and by watching anelka in the game tonight against everton, he wouldn't be half as lazy as anelka was tonight, i mean - most of the chances he had on goal he missed in his chelsea shirt but i know that seeing him in white he would have put the effert into it - did anybody watch it ?

if we do get marlon king even tho i dont want him, i would like to see megson sign maybe one or two rising stars, like toto tamuz or that gomis bloke, so if king doesnt really cut it we've got someone with talent chomping at the bit to get on and eventually be the replacment we need for anelka. i dont just want to see a 5 million for marlon king and thats it, plus if he knee goes again we are back to square one. please get cahill!

Just had a call from a friend of mine who is a catering manager in london. He did a buffet at white hart lane last night and overheard a conversation about wanderers putting an offer in for Darren Bent. He did not know who they were or how much the offer was for, so it may just be a couple of punters having a chat about a rumour.

I would prefer Bent to Marlon King, at least Bent has scored a decent amount in the prem. I know hes not worth 16 mill, but a deal around 6 million would be worth it. Its probably just pie in the sky, but I'm starting to worry we are going to finish up with a 2nd string striker from an average prem club or an overated striker from the fizzy league.

Sunderland have signed Swedish International striker Rade Prica. He was top scorer in the Danish League last season. Cost 2 million. The Danish are no mugs so for a couple of million its not much of a gamble.

We are not going to get proven premiership goalscorers for under 10 million. If megson has a bid in for a sriker in the premiership it is likely to be another clubs reserve. Its time to get offers in abroad where prices are cheaper and its less of a gamble. We cant afford to spend 4+ million in desperation and then get no return.

I heard the same thing fernando about darren bent, but that was last friday and it gone abit quite mate, so if your friend has good hearing then he cannot be far from the truth mate, apart from the price - 11 mln was the price and if we have put a bid in, no body else around us would entertain him because he is to expensive for them, ie - wigan, sunderland, fulham, birmingham and middle of the boat boro !!, so if we have put a bid in then it's up to him if he wants to come up here isn't it really, only 7 days to go !!

I used to have Aouate in my Spanish Fantasy Football team and he was very hot and cold, one week he'd make lots of saves and gain lots of points, the next he'd let in several goals and end up with a minus score.

Why do we need to bring in another GK when we have Al Habsi sitting on the bench week in week out?? We don't need to be spending money on a GK when we are desperate for a striker !!

GOOD POINT BUDDY ..

If anything we need to get rid of one or two of them before we even think about another one, i'd keep adam bogdan - ali al habsi and of course jussi ..

I really hope we have a new player on our books by today or tommorow, fingers crossed it'll be the striker before the defender !!

It's a standard agreement at most new stadia that the catering in the concourses is sub-contract by way of open tender. Basically it's not worth the hassle to do it themselves so it makes sense to take a fee instead. Is that such a big deal? Bolton are a football club after all - not a pie making firm. Bolton also has grounds maintenance contracts all around the stadium - are you saying we should buy a load of lawnmowers, spades and rakes and do it ourselves? It's just common practice. It's really no big deal.

De veres don't make pies! we are averaging 20,000 fans through the door, on average probably spend £5 whilst inside the stadium. All de veres do is get contracted labour staff from an agency and pre preppared products from greenalghs/fosters. they must be making a healthy profit or they wouldnt bother doing it. seen as we need all the money we can get surly this is a vital resource that we should be tapping into.

for me its like openeing a restaurant and letting someone take the bar fees.

i bet a pound to a pinch of ****, arsenal, newcastle, man utd dont outsource this very proffitable resource.

are you saying we have a turnover of £40million a year and we cant run a simple bar!

dont throw your toys out of the pram, i just dont see why it is that we do this!

allthough not a business man, i do work within a proffesional business enviroment and i do understand the principles of outsourcing. I was of the opinion this usually occurs when something is not profitable to do due to fixed costs being at a certain level, thus out sourcing to a company that does the same service for many companies means they can provide this and make a profit.

i.e your analogy with the gardening equipment, not worth bolton doing this due to cost of running (lawnmowers, landscapers wages e.t.c)!

is this correct?

de veres as far as i know dont run these sort of services at other grounds! They dont use their hotel staff they get agency staff and they get pre prepared food from somewhere else.

i cannot see how de veres can run this facillity for less than we can thus i am questioning the fact that we do this. They make a proffit and even if this is only 20k (£1/head/game), to me that is a half decent players wages.

breezeblock, Manchester says...
1:25pm Thu 24 Jan 08

De Vere have been involved in the industry for many years - the fact they don't appear to run these facilities anywhere else is irrelevant. The fact they have a connection to the Reebok is the obvious link. I doubt you could ever suspect the club is mis-managing the catering unless you knew how much De Vere (and the other contract holders) pay and what the cost would be to undertake the work in-house. As a guess I don't reckon it would be worth the effort or the fuss and I know that if I were in Gartside's shoes I would do the same...that way the income is fixed every year for the length of the contract, there is no risk, there are no hassles with all those non-English speaking agency staff and also no risk what-so-ever...none at all. Easy life. It makes sense or else Arsenal wouldn't be doing it and I nor would Man United who, according to several website, appear to the same as us.

birch, chorley says...
1:48pm Thu 24 Jan 08

Fair enough if that is your stance. Personally i think if it was all that hassle then de veres would not be interested in doing it, i feel they must make reasonable sums of money doing this.

i cant see de veres being able to run the kiosks cheaper than us due to the fact their are no fixed costs. they maybe able to buy the larger a little cheaper and that is it, i cant see them serving greenalghs pies or rollover hot dogs in thier hotels. i just think with cash as tight as it is we should be looking at making every penny ourselves and trying to increase these revenue streams on a regular basis.

thanks for your time

breezeblock, Manchester says...
1:56pm Thu 24 Jan 08

That's not quite correct though. For starters we'd have to wait until the contract expired before we did anything and then we would have an outlay to pay for everything from stock, to staff (these plebs in the kiosks have to be managed by someone and those managers have to be managed, etc.), to signage, to equipment plus the time spent setting up the whole thing.

For srgument's sake let's say it was going to cost £200k up front...I can guarantee half the folk on this board would then question why we are spending that much when De Vere and the others were paying more than that per season for the contract!
