Scoreless Whites miss out

Wanderers 0 Fulham 0

WANDERERS missed a great opportunity to boost their survival chances when they were held to a goalless draw by fellow strugglers Fulham.

Victory for Gary Megson's would have opened up a nine-point gap over the second-bottom Cottagers, who were without a win in 13 games.

But, on a night when clear-cut chances were few and far between at the Reebok, they were forced to settle for a share of spoils.

Whites defender Lubomir Michalik came within inches of breaking the deadlock when he struck the post on 71 minutes after goalkeeper Antti Niemi had flapped at Andranik's free-kick.

Andy O'Brien then missed a gilt-edge chance to seal the points when he headed Matt Taylor's corner wide from close range just a minute later.

That apart, neither team possessed the necessary creativity to break the stalemate and it was easy to see why both are locked in a relegation dogfight.

Shocking!!!!!! If i hear another quote from the Bolton camp saying they still haven't spent the Anelka Monney then the Question has to be asked of WHY did we sell him in the first place?????? Where are our goals going to come from because we don't have a goal scorer in our ranks!!!!! Extremely dissapointed making it extremely hard on ourselves.........Of

What a disgraceful team for a home team in a relegation battle....Megson is going for 0-0 at home and away!!!
Why oh why can't the higher echelons at the Reebok see we need players with speed. We are so predestrian that any chance of counter attack or getting round the back of Fulhams defence was never going to happen.
If thats the type of football we are expected to pay for then its understandable that gates will be low.Come Gartside and co get the cheque book out and buy some pacey strikers. And lets make a fist of things.0-0 is just not good enough.

Jaaskelainen - Untroubled
A. O'Brien - Untroubled
Michalik - Sharp against Dempsey, missed good chances
Gardner - Looked a threat on the attack but still no end product
Steinsson - The one shining light for me, this guy looks like a quality signing.
J. O'Brien - Did OK in 1st half, couldnt understand substitution
McCann - Far, far too slow, gave away ball too much and will surely lose place when Diouf is back
Nolan - Quiet game but went about his business well, unlucky with his header
Guthrie - One of his poorest performances in a white shirt, gave ball away far too easy and poor 1st touch, deserved to go off
Taylor - Sound game but still isnt quite 100% fit.
Davies - Same old, makes good knockdowns, but no one with the instinct to finish the ball
-----------------
Cohen - Lacks PL experience, dives into tackles however does look to have a good touch, potential to be worked with
Andranik - Great to see the lad playing, was unlucky when Hangelaand took Taylor's cross off his toes, lack of football showed on this lad, lets hope we see more of him.
Helguson - Not enough time to make an impact, but excellent to see him back.
----------------
Overall Verdict: No Campo and Stelios in the 16 leads me to believe that maybe them 2 could depart over the next two days.

I agree with most of what you said except Guthrie - I thought he played well in the first half and chased everything. Couldnt understand why JO'B was subbed - although I dont know why we are persevering with him in the 'Campo' role and why he was playing in the first place.' The lack of pace was shocking - it's going to be a very stressful springtime.

POOR,POOR,POOR,POOR. Each week as we (the fans) leave the ground and then arrive the following week we say ''it can't get any worse''. But oh my God....We didn't have a single creative player in the team this evening. Don't know why I watse my time watching the shambles. The football being served up is worse than the so called lager they sell at the ground! You lot may think its a bit premature but I can't see how Mr Megson is going to turn it around. Maye it's time to regroup, accept our fate, and find a manager who will entertain us next year in the Championship. Sad,sad days to be a Wanderer.

Certainties for relegation on that form. Cant say Im disappointed, as fully expected it, and will have a good drink tomorrow on my 0-0 bet.

If that is the best side Megson can pick, then move over mate. 1st half packed full of defensive midfielders who kept falling over each other.Nolan was hopeless as ever in centre mid, but looked better when he kept to the wing. Young Guthries game has been spoit by being played out of position to accomodate Nolan and Mccann.

How does Megson ever think we will score playing like that? Cohen looks like replacing Gerald Cid as the worst player ever to wear the white shirt. Andranik managed to deliver a quality cross which Michalik should have done better, was unlucky to volley straight at the keeper, and in between fell over himself a la Vaz Te. At least he looked lively.

Jaaskelainen - Untroubled, but Fulham had a couple of very close chances.
Steinsson - another solid display. Couldn't fault him
A OBrien - few poor headers, but had little to do otherwise. Should have scored from corner but headed wide.
Michalik - solid at back. Prob best defensive display seen from him. Got into some great positions in the penalty area, shame he isn't a goal scorer cos he would have had at least a couple.
Gardner - looked dangerous when going forward and made several excellent tackles when on back foot. But made some atrocious passes.
Guthrie - ran his heart out but several times he felt the need to beat every man on the pitch and not make the early pass into space. Cant fault his effort.
Nolan - didnt really make his presence felt until going forward with a couple of excellent chances to score from headers. Defensively, struggled to track back.
McCann - only member of midfield that could tackle but struggled moving forward with play.
J Obrien - started slow and struggled in defensive holding role. Looked far more comfortable going forward. Taken off at half time.
Taylor - Possibly the best left foot crosser of the ball I have seenat the Reebok. Ok he isn't a pacy winger. But he knew exactly where to cross the ball. Encouraging.
Davies - some good knock ons (but no-one there) and holding the ball up. But missed a sitter.

Subs:
Cohen - i am still holding out judgement on this guy. The only thing he can do consistantly well is fouling the opposition. Sloppy at passing, tackling, shooting etc... But in last 5 mins did put in an excellent cross from the left wing and had a fair effort in last min - still not good enough
Andranik - never got a chance to show what he can do. Ran ball out of play once but was encouraging seeing him want to go forwarded rather than sit back and defend
Helguson - brought n far to late. Not enough time to do anything. Glad to see him fit again.

Overall:
After this performance I can only see us getting relegated. Too defensive, no idea of how to attack, and seem to hope that we'll get a goal at some point, some how.

Ginger Mourinhio? Ginger Breadman more like.

It's not rocket science is it? You sell a world-class striker who has scored the majority of your goals and hey presto, you can't score and don't really look like doing.

We will sign a striker in the next couple of days but we have painted ourselves into a corner and will have to pay top dollar as our desperation is obvious. How this player performs will decide whether we stay up and that is clearly a very dangerous policy. It's SOOOO crucial that we stay in the PL 'cause who's to say we'd bounce back like we have in the past? Coventry, Leicester City, Leeds - it doesn't bear thinking about. I think we'll stay up... just, but it should never have been this close. Those who are blaming Megson are missing the point, PG appointing LSL is where the rot started, Megson has had to right a lot of wrongs and at least he's got us defending properly. He'll never be poplular I know, but he is not at fault for this season.

Just finished reading Neil Warnock's autobiography and he says that all Gary Megson's teams have been boring (think he might have a point)
Where's the logic in taking off Guthrie the most hard working player and the only one likely to create something and leaving on McCann a defensive midfielder when Fulham were happy to take a point?
Why wait until last 7 minutes to bring on a second striker when the game was there for the taking?
At least the signing of Steinsson looks a good buy, but Cohen as said earlier is on a par with Cid.

Awful peformances from most of the team. I think the reason Guthrie gave the ball away a few times was because he didn't have any outlets. I lost count of the number of times he was being tackled by more than one Fulham player at a time and still managed to come away with the ball, only to come up against another red shirt - we don't have any players who can run and create space!

Whenever McCann or Ricardo got the ball it was booted up field in hope. I can't remember anything that Nolan contributed to the game apart from his back heel flick across the goal. Joey did ok but not creative enough for that role. Taylor should get better, Steinnson looks solid but how are we going to score? Lets hope South Africa beat Senegal on Thurs and Diouf comes back to meet up with our new striker!

Why Oh Why can't we keep the ball on the floor? One of the best chances came from Guthrie playing the ball along the grass into the penalty box, Nolan flicked it on and I think Taylor nearly managed to get a toe to it. All we seem to do is hoof into the box! - it's RUBBISH!

Guthrie on the right ..... why. A couple of good moves first half, but tried too much on occasion and his touch let him down. Get him back in the centre.

Joey O'B, McCann and Nolan in a triangle in the centre of the park. None of them has any pace at all and none of them can pass. Joey did his best but he cannot play that role. Nolan and McCann were pathetic. (Headless Chickens)

Tamir Cohen ..... Clueless and a long way off the premiership. Needs to be loaned to fizzy league to learn the british game.

Andranik ..... I feel sorry for him as he has been out too long. Needs regular runs to get his sharpness back.

Matt Taylor ...... sweet left foot and powerful shot. Tried to back davies up in the first half and tired quickly in the second.

All the defence looked solid .... but Fulham were no threat.

Davies ...... No supply and no support !!!!!

Megson is trying to win games from midfield and we don't have the pace and quality. Cid criticised our training .... From what I've seen tonight he was right. No running off the ball, crap control and non-existent passing ability.

I agree with anyone who thinks this is a negative post, but I've just seen a negative team playing against Fulham who posed no threat whatsoever. Why can't Megson see what the dwindling crowd can see.

Everyone agrees that Steinsson is a quality signing. Who gets the credit .... Megson? This lad was not scouted, he was recommended to the club by Gudni who also takes the credit for advising the player to sign for us.

Megson has got Taylor. He has some qualities and will get fitter, but not the pacey winger I was hoping for. He also get Cohen who is looking like a little boy lost in a crowd.

He has 2 days left and I hope he has done his homework with the scouts because if we spend a fortune on panic buys that are crap we will go down and have only 2 or 3 players of quality to bring us back up.

So like you do due to biased commentating on the radio you only get a proper feel by watching it. Result was still the same CRAP!!!! Tonight we showed how badly we miss Campo, His distribution is usually spot hence Davies being Ineffective in this game. Putting another striker on with 8 mins to go????? Yeah answers on a postcard on that one. I could go on & on..... Then i get home and go on Skysports to listen to the postmatch interview and see Megson dodge the ultimate question regarding (you can guess) buying a striker with the funds made available from Anelka's sale, I just don't get it!!! My mate who went to the Belgrade match when it all kicked off had Gartside telling him amongst others that the sale of Anelka was imminent so why not replace him first before selling him???? It isn't rocket science is it??? As I said yesterday, whilst Kevin Davies is on the pitch without a scoring striker to support him, we will get nowhere. Davies is not and never will be a 'striker' who scores goals. I was watching his runs closely tonight and he was supposed to be our main attacker. He constantly made runs out wide when we were in attacking positions, leaving nobody to pick the ball up in the middle. We will never play good attacking football while he is in the team without a good striker with him.

Steinsson looks like a great signing for us, he did things tonight that Hunt hasn't been able to do for seasons. Looks solid and a good signing.

Taylor looks okay but not brilliant at the moment. I think this is due to a lack of games, and soon i think he will be playing well.

Guthrie looked poor today so i was shocked when the fans booed at the decision to bring him off. Finally, we saw Andranik! He didn't get long enough to show what he can do though.

Why has Ricardo Gardner not been able to pass a ball straight or hit a good cross in his career?! Everytime he attempts to cross, the ball flies over everyone and out of play. I can't criticise him too much because he is usually one of the better players for us.

We need to sign a striker desperately, with Cahill too would be nice. Our defence seems better with a good right back, Cahill would make central defence solid. And a good striker would make a massive difference rather than Davies on his own isolated and looking lost.

The reality is, we have too many over expecting supporters who boo every home game if we dont win. The expectations are way to high for us, as for your gut feeling about Megson, when he took over, we were bottom of the league, so I don't think he has done a bad job. It is the players who underperform not Megson. He picks the team, and tonight picked the best team he had available, but the players didn't produce any quality. Give Megson a chance, January is always difficult to sign players, and the 3 players so far, Cohen, Taylor and Steinsson haven't been bad buys. The defence seems to have sorted out now, we just need to sign a striker who will knock the goals in. Every point is vital when we are in this position.

You say no attack. I sort of agree. We created very little tonight once again. This is because Diouf isn't playing for one, and Davies is on his own and isnt the most skillful of players as Anelka was. So with Davies on his own, he has no chance because he doesn't have the pace or ability to get the goals.

I know everyone will disagree, but i think if Vaz Te gets fit and starts games consistantly in a centre forwards position, he will score goals for us, because he makes excellent runs, unlike anyone else in our whole squad.

Why would any player worth his salt want to come and join this sad excuse for a "football" team? I deliberately use the invereted commas, because whatever it was, it could not be described as football, not good football that is.

Tonight's performance was one of the worst performances I have ever seen, and apart from one or two exceptions, I think every player should be fined a week's wages for failing to turn up.

I have been trying to be positive all season, but if we can't even beat Fulham who were almost worse than we were, I seriously fear for our Premiership survival, and also think that we would struggle to get back up again out of the Championship.

I posted last week that I dreaded what the result would be, once we had been told that the players had been taken on a break to Spain. We never perform well after one of these breaks, and what exactly have they done this season to deserve such a treat? They should have been out on the training ground morning and afternoon (not just 2 hours a day, 5 days a week), they should have been braving the wind and rain, not sunning themselves on some beach.

They get paid very good money for very little effort, if they were in an ordinary job and put in such disgraceful performances they would be sacked and rightly so, the least they could do is look like they are earning their money.

I dread to think what the result will be against Athletico Madrid, we will get battered.

This is the most frustrated I've been for a long time. I've religiously followed BW for a few years but during todays play I started to have thoughts about hanging up my supporters boots.

This was the worst!

An 11 man defensive midfield team who bunted and doolallied around for 93 minutes.

Gardner must be on Ganja at the moment, Nolan might do better with it, Lubo missed three &^%$#@%^& chances, Taylor and Cohen really mediocre, Guthrie strolling, - Yes our new right back showed the most spirt & potential, Big KD worked hard and Andy O'B is solid BUT - it's soooo obvious that Mr Megson has not got a creative bone in his body! He keeps playing carthorse tactics!

Beating Fulham at home was a must. But their attitude suggested it was just 'a walk in the park today - DUH!"

If they do take ice cold baths after a match as reported, perhaps they might think of taking one before the bloody match next time - and stick Mr Megson in it while you're at it!

It is being reported in the Daily Mirror that Birmingham have won the race to sign Gary Cahill.

Why did Wanderers World TV refer to him as the 'new signing' last night? Does anyone at the club know what is going on?

Last night was a total shambles against a team who were there for the taking. We are totally devoid of attacking ideas. I was amazed that they gave the crowd out at over 17,000 as there was no way near that.

I'm just waiting for Friday morning to see what (if any) new signings will be coming in, but it's all getting a bit deja vu from the club with targets not being suitable, but we have money to spend and are trying very hard etc.

No doubt we will get the same promises as ever about May when season tickets go on sale.

A word of advice BWFC. Don't produce many, because you ain't selling alot.

Trying even harder to keep the faith.

This is an absolute disgrace, we are a shambles and with that sort of deffencive mentallity deserve to go down.

the club are definatly lying about the gates. i allways thought these must be linked in with the accounts but no way where their that many their! i thought this earlier in the season when we where getting 20,020 every week, they didnt want people to see it had droped below the elusive 20 mark.

we now have the worst average att in the league! its up to megson and gartside, act now or it would be suicide for the club!

less thaan 48 hours left!

Crikey, if you think I and others have "too high an expectation" after that performance all I can say is that your expectations are as low as a snake's belly.

Also, if it's only 'down to the players' why ever bother having a manager? Fact is a blind man could see there was little motivation and even less tactics.

If you think that's as much as we can expect then see you in Division 2 mate.

The players last night were playing to orders. Sit on the half way line when they have the ball and when we have it try to go wide and hope for a throw in, corner or free kick. Last night was not the players, it was Megsons fault.

gary megson is tactically inept, football is not about playing your best 11 players its about playing your best team!

10 defensive players doesnt constitute a team worthy of winning the most vital of games.

if he was not going to play braaten/stelios last night then he never will which means we have less than 48 hours and need 2/3 attacking players!

Megson doesnt have a clue in this league! he is not premiership quality. everyone in the press says he has taken us back to playing like big sam.

BIG SAM WOULD NEVER PLAY THAT DEFENSIVE IN A MUST WIN AGAINST FULHAM AT HOME!

THIS IS THE WORST WE HAVE BEEN SINCE THE YEAR WE GOT RELEGATED AT BURNDEN AND EVEN THEN WE CREATED MORE!

MEGSON OUT! GARTSIDE OUT!

We must beat Reading or we've had it and how many supporters will travel to that unpronouncable place?

Birmingham set to win race for Villa's Cahill
tribalfootball.com - January 30, 2008

Birmingham City have won the race for Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill.
The Mirror says Birmingham have beaten relegation rivals Bolton in the chase for £4million Cahill.

Wanderers looked favourites to land the Aston Villa centre-back, but when City matched their offer Cahill opted to stay in Birmingham.

"Even Notts Forest"? That's a strange one, they are a far bigger club than we will ever be, why should we try to compete with their gates? They had a top of the table clash, remember how 'up' for those games we used to be. Our crowd of 18,000 was no disgrace, Boro only got 22,000 and they're another club that have traditionally always got far more than us.
Good atmosphere as well, given the negativity of Megson's tactics the crowd is amazingly supportive during the 90 minutes.

I couldn’t be bothered reading through all these comments so I apologise if I repeat anything but the people who actually went to the game (myself included) then good on you for having an opinion but people who didn’t go – you can’t read what rubbish was said about the game and make a sound judgement.
J’OB I thought was having a decent game especially as it’s not his usual position. I too was baffled with his substitution.
Michalik – if only the 3 chances had fallen to his head.
I’m assuming they took Taylor off as he isn’t match fit – but hell Nolan has put weight on since I last was at the Reebok….he needs some serious training schedule to lose that chunkiness!
McCann I guess stayed on for defensive back up but he didn’t do much.

A striker struggling to get first team action should be jumping at the chance to play for us – our defence is improving all the time (Steinsson was awesome and a breath of fresh air).
Any striker coming in certainly won’t have anyone challenging him.
Gurthrie has a good turn and pace but he is a long way off the finished article.
Thankfully Fulham were just as bad.
Someone who knows where the net is will be better than nothing up front for us.
I’m still secretly hoping Megson has something up his sleeve or it will be such a waste to let is all slip for the sake of no strikers!

Last night I had to sit and watch highly paid so called footballers trying to play football. It was utter rubbish. They should hang their heads in shame making the supporters who turned out to watch such crap. When training are they never learned how to shot when they get near goal, all they seem to do is try and walk it into the goal. Megsons training routine is surley not working. Last night there was no passion,no commitment and no idea. Looking who we have to play yet makes me wander where our points are going to come from. Not many home games left, and if we keep drawing these I am afraid it will not be to our advantage and the future will be looking bleak unless we get help from them below us. We have no chance of signing a striker at this late stage so all Megson can do now is take a chance with some of our young players and see what they can do, they cannot be any worse than the team last night. COME ON YOU WHITES

I think that is the end a team with no quality no passion no one seems to want to do their best for a great club. What a load of rubbish two attempts on goal.We need a complete outlook get rid of the entire squad apart from a few exceptionms lets get rid of Megson, Ask Davies and Gartside to step down. We need a refreshing manager someone like Warlock. Or a certain Mr Allardyce. No one signs for Bolton because they are like the Titanic doomed.

That team had 10 days since the last game to set up for Fulham.Jussi, the excellent Steinson and both centre halves were drilled to fire the ball diagonally to the left wing where Davies and Taylor were lurking. Davies was up against a centre back who was never going to be beaten in the air and Taylor was playing with his back to goal, a position he can not play(like Nolan).10 days preparation and no plan B.If Helgusson was fit enough for the bench why not play 4-4-2 in the second half, hey we were at home and looking for 3 points weren't we?
Joey O'Brien in midfield is a non starter, the lad can only play back to front and has neither the speed or the touch to play the holding role.Guthrie would be OK there but not where he played last night(he showed why he's at Bolton and not in Liverpool's first team).
Megson again showed hesitation when the cross from Steinson was almost touched in by Taylor. Andranik was stripped ready to come on but Megson went with the momentum and wasted 10 minutes before bringing him on.The lad should be told he's in the team for the next 6 matches and leave it at that because he can play.Presumably Stelios, Campo and Alonso are all being fired off before midnight tomorrow hence their non appearance last night.I said give Megson until midnight tomorrow then judge him. As another correspondant to this blog would say "tick tock"

Unless we get a striker in ( which looks doubtful) I can not see us scoring many goals at all. 22 points with 14 games to go, and still to play the big boys, I wonder whether we will break to 40 point barrier? Don't want to sound like a doom-monger, but last night we could not have scored in a brothel. We lacked any creativity or quality in the final third especially. Poor crowd, poor atmosphere, and there was a feelng of apathy not only from the crowd, but from may of the players. Those who emerged with any credit being Guthrie and Taylor who ran their socks off, Steinson and Andy O'brien . Otherwise, given the 10 day break, very disappointing saying we were at home and needed a win!
