GARY Megson has admitted that that he was running out of time to sign a striker after failing in his ambitious bid to bring Eidur Gudjohnsen back to the Reebok.

The Wanderers boss had hoped to prise the 29-year-old Iceland international away from Spanish giants Barcelona in a loan deal, but the player, pictured, insists he is staying in Spain, at least until the end of the season.

That left Megson desperately scouring the markets for forward players who would go some way towards filling the void left by the sale of Nicolas Anelka to Chelsea. But, with the transfer window closing at midnight on Thursday, he admitted it was a tall order.

"We were never going to get a straightforward replacement for Nic," he said. "But we are looking to get another forward into the football club. But, just like everybody else, we are running out of time. Eidur would have fit the bill, but unfortunately he's at a huge football club and he wants to stay there."
