All change for Ewood derby duel

GARY Megson made five changes to the team that secured a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup as Wanderers returned to their Premiership survival battle at Blackburn.

Out went Nicky Hunt, Jlloyd Samuel, Stelios, Gavin McCann and Joey O'Brien, who all made big contributions to the scoreless draw at Atletico Madrid.

In came Gretar Steinsson, Ricardo Gardner, Ivan Campo, Danny Guthrie and El-Hadji Diouf to make up what is generally regarded as Megson's strongest possible first 11.

Young O'Brien was given a place on the subs' bench alongside January signings Tamir Cohen and Grzegorz Rasiak, who were ineligible for the European game, and Abdoulaye Meite, who has been unable to regain his place as a back four regular since returning from African Nations Cup duty.

Blackburn, who were looking for a double after winning 2-1 at the Reebok last month, were without injured defenders Andre Ooijer and Ryan Nelson but David Dunn and Morten Gamst Pedersen were back after serving suspensions.

Rovers: Friedel; Warnock, Samba, Khizanishvili, Emerton; Bentley, Reid, Dunn, Gamst Pedersen; McCarthy, Santa Cruz. Subs: Tugay, Mokoena, Derbyshire, Roberts, Brown.

Wanderers: Jaaskelainen; Steinsson, Cahill, Andy O'Brien, Gardner; Campo; Diouf, Nolan, Guthrie, Taylor; Davies. Subs: Meite, Joey O'Brien, Cohen, Rasiak, Al-Habsi.

Referee: Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear)

Another uninspiring bench picked by an uninspiring manager.
Meite, Joey, that clown Cohen and Rasiak. Where are Stelios and Andranik? At least they can go forward.
This bloke with his negative thinking is taking us down. Europe a different matter. Being ultra cautious seems to help there.

true. 2 clean sheets vs atletico counts for b*gger all now. why such a strong team picked vs atletico in 2nd leg. why not give andranik & vaz te, meite, dzamaili etc a run out. ?
we can't win the uefa cup so it's just a total waste of time. this isn't wise after the event, i sd this before the 2nd leg, and also said on paper our next 3 matches, bl'burn, liv and man u ( which latter thankfully been moved ). any neutral would put us down for 0 pt's in all of them. we are playing a bit better but the fixtures are looking worse too. we've only kept 1 clean sheet vs a top 10 side...and that was man u.

When you've no strikers i cant see how were gonna score goals!!! This is a big reality check after Thursday night. Liverpool, Wigan, City and Arsenal next 4 games. Only 3 points above the relegation zone.

Only the fact that Reading and Fulham are so poor might be our saving grace but we've got such a difficult run in!!

How many games has this loser had in charge? And we are still close to the drop. Cant put all the blame on Sammy Lee. He's had enough games to pull us clear. We will pay for dropping points against Fulham and Newcastle with his 1 up formation and nobody who can score up front.

nah there is one reason and one reason only why we lost that match. clattenburg. never in a million years was that a penalty. never. and he should have played advantage when rasiak was through one on one. that would have put us 2 1 up and we could have defended that. clattenburg was a disgrace and the smug git couldnt wait to give decisions against us and sorry but cohen is the worst player i've ever seen. for f*ck sake.

Yeah the 1st penalty was a joke and before the 2nd penalty we shud have been awarded 2 ourselves and then Rasiak clean through but play brought back was just refereeing incompetency at its worst. The ref has had a major influence on the outcome of this game but it doesnt disguise our obvious problems.

The scousers will be at full strength next Sunday cos they dont play in the champions league the following week, their game is the week after.

got to disagree mate apart from 1st ten mins we looked solid till f==k wit ref give that pen. Then we all over them 2nd half rasiak clean through no advantage given could of been 2 -1 .2nd pen bit dodgy to .We get no luck.pompey bloke 3 yrds of side the other week goal given, rasiak 1 yrd of not given. We not getting any breaks at mo ,jussi hardly had to do antyhing compared to friedel. We just need a break and it will come cause we are playing well home and away and creating chances.Keep the faith boys do u really beleive we deserved to have lost 4-1 ,a draw we deserved at the very least.Got gut feeling we will beat Liverpool.

Dont like being negative, but this will definitely go to the wire - the run in isnt good, just have to hope that Reading and Fulham cant put a few wins together to get above us (hopefully Fulham already gone!) Will take 17th now but hopefully safety assured before last game! Anelke sale now looking to be foolish at best, criminal at worst and a betrayal of all fans! No goal scorer means no wins! Two people to blame. 1 ..... The joke of a referee. 2 ...... Mego, who believes we can defend our way to safety in the league and victory in europe. The prem is very different to europe. Faster and less time to think. Vaz Te has the speed to play alongside Davies, but never gets the chance. A solid defence with defensive midfielders in front of them is not enough to win games. Our goal difference could be worth a point, but we are relying on other teams losing. Europe may as well be a million miles away, because Wigan, Fulham and Reading are still trying to attack. If we go down trying to win matches, then so be it. If we go down defending from the first whistle we will deserve it.

Agree Fernando. Have just watched Spurs win. They appointed a Manager with proven track record.
Megson is scared of his own shadow.
Another sign of a poor manager is one who picks his own signings above others.
Cohen and Rasiak better than Andranik, Stelios and Vaz Te? A good manager will admit he got it wrong, not keep playing them in the hope that one day they might come good.

We have every chance to stay up still - if you look at today's result, it looks bad but it flatters Blackburn big time, could have gone either way. Megson is ultra-defensive, no one would dispute it, but we got a goal and on another day that would have been worth a point or even three. It's going to go to the wire, we're not going to pull clear now, we're going to be there or thereabouts right to the death.

We have fickle supporters. Megson was being praised by fans on thursday night, after this result, people are blaming him. There is no way we deserved to lose that 4-1, we had no luck at all.

The first goal wasn't a penalty for a start, earlier Diouf should have scored to give us the lead. After the first penalty, Nolan hit the bar. Unlucky to be behind at half time.

After half time, we came out and played very well. We were well on top and got a deserved equaliser when Davies scored. We then continued to attack, and scored again, with a debatable offside decision ruling it out. We started to dominate, and then they got a penalty, which from my view at the ground looked like Cahill won the ball, but I haven't seen any replays. After the penalty, we looked defeated, tired and uninterested. However, I blame the referee more than anyone else. He was shocking today, gave us nothing and for the second year running, we conceded 2 penalties at Blackburn.

A decent performance, but we once again payed for failing to turn chances into goals. Very unlucky to lose, never mind to lose 4-1.

On the other, you have to wonder why they're such a fantasist, and the need to be several different guises. That and the clear fact they don't have a relationship of note. Would someone put so much effort into trying to be so many different people if they had a partner/friends/ a life to get on with?

No thanks mate, Im choosy who I got the match with.

Back to the footy. Anyone got any ideas on how we are going to get another probable 13 points to stay up? If the defence starts leaking, I cant see more than 1 win from what's left.

Every week, the midfield get overun, create nowt. Guthrie stick out wide where he is ineffective, presumably to keep Nolan happy. Megson back to picking a rubbish bench again. Id sooner see Nicky Hunt there than Meite for one thing. Also, what can Joey O Brien add as sub? No goal threat , thats for sure.

That Cohen- tell me he is a wind up? He isnt for real is he? I saw Andranik on for 15 mins as sub against Fulham and in that time showed more goal threat and quality than any of our midfielders. Quality cross for a goal, one attempt blocked. Was it Fulham or someone else- memory failing. Beer time- See ya later lads and lasses.

The trouble is that it's hard to say how many points we need. I honestly think we'll trouble Liverpool next week but I could be wrong:-)
Relegation threatened teams often pull off a few unlikely results and I don't see why we should be any different. You're right about the bench though, I think he gets the starting 11 right but where are the impact subs? His whole game plan revolves around hoping that we don't go two down and have to launch an all-out assault and that just isn't realistic. After Nolan, Stelios is just about the only player that we have that I always fancy to score if he gets a chance. As for Andranik, there's been countless posts on the same subject this season. Lee, then Megson just don't fancy him and the fans cannot see why. Baffling, frankly.

On the subject of the next game, we're really unlucky that Liverpool have a three-week break in their European schedule and not two like normal 'cause both Milan teams are at home in the second leg. If they were playing that game three days after us, you could certainly expect at least one of Gerrard or Torres not starting the game. F*ck our luck!

Our goal difference could be worth a point, but we are relying on other teams losing. Europe may as well be a million miles away, because Wigan, Fulham and Reading are still trying to attack. If we go down trying to win matches, then so be it. If we go down defending from the first whistle we will deserve it. Come on Megson, it's time to grow some ****.
I dont understand this, did you go to the game? At no time from 1st minute to last did we look to defend. Which period of the game are you referring to? At 0-0 we tried to take the game to them, not always successfully but that's not the point. For the entire 1st 20 mins of the 2nd half we attacked non stop, and after going behind we tried to get back into the game. A good manager will admit he got it wrong, not keep playing them in the hope that one day they might come good.

What's that all about that's not what you call fans. I seriously think we are in trouble if we don't get our act together. Ok everybody knows we should have a better striker but we just got to wait till the summer & hope we can stay up so we can get a decent one too. You didn't see liverpool fans not turning up for games when they were in bad form for the last few weeks. They stick behind the team 100% & hope for better days. But one thing about us is that when we win we all start praising the team & when we lose you start slagging off. That's not what you call fans!!!

The only two things we fell to were that guy who tries to call himself a ref, and the fact that when we were 2-1 down we acctually didnt roll over we tried to get back in the game but we were unlucky and got caught on the break. Rovers were no means better than us but probably just deserved the 3 points, never by such a margin though. I'm kinda glad guthrie cant play next week, because even though im a big fan of him hes becoming too complacent and dwelling on the ball.

Clattenburg, Dean and Styles. What is it with you guys and penalties in our Blackburn games?

Fantastic start to the second half and most commentators agree that Bolton were the better team and result would have been different with better refereeing. I am still optimistic about Megson and staying up, he must have given them a good half time team talk today which I have been waiting for, for some time. Apart from the scoreline I enjoyed watching and can still see improvements but agree about the Cohen, Stelios, Andranik comments.

Fans fantastic, must have been well over 2000. Behind the goal was packed and we cheered up to and after the final whistle when the team came over to us. We were't disappointed with their effort and improving skills, only the refereeing.

Been away for a few days, so had to give up my ticket for today. Firstly, really pleased about UEFA result. Cant wait for the next match as home leg last time was great.

I agree with posters who said Megson seemed better suited to UEFA matches where defence often wins. By the way, love the " neggers meggers " whoever said that. It is very worrying that we concede 4 goals, as we are not going to score many.

His use and naming of subs again useless. Stelios, Andranik, Vaz te surely are better options.
I am struggling to understand a team selection which has a midfielder top scoring with 5, none of the other midfielders or defence ever score. We have always had defenders and midfielders who could score, but they all spend too much time and energy trying to keep clean sheets. Our strikers hardly ever strike but both are good players.

I still think we have good players who have been led badly all season. LSL wanted to attack but forgot to defend. Megson prays every night for a clean sheet- he is very limited in his ambitions for the club. Two really bad appointments could cost us dearly.

In the last few games we have played with a more attacking emphasis, today we had 2 up front at all times, and often 3 once Rasiak was on. Taylor, Guthrie and Nolan often supported the attack. I used to be very critical of Megson's 1 up front policy and that he would bring all 11 back for defending corners. I am pleased to say he has not played this way in the last few games. By the way I agree with anyone that says Stelios should get more of a chance, but I dont expect to agree with everything our manager does, whoever he is. We played better today than we did last year at Ewood, same as the joke scoreline as Man City & v Pompey, I refuse to be kidded by scorelines which referees and bad luck can influence.

Overhall i feel Megson gave it up for us as soon as the 3rd goal went in with regards to his Subs. At the end of the day we lost to a team who want European football next season. We (Bolton) have had a torrid start to the season with only 3 points away from the drop but hey we are still in the last 16 of the Uefa cup competition (not like the INBREDS) so bask in your glory tonight, it won't last long. Exactly. If I hadnt gone to the game I'd be asking for comments from people that we there. Julie - yes I am happy. If there was a Bolton game tomorrow I'd be looking forward to seeing it because we would be competitive, decent to watch and would have a chance of scoring a goal or 2. I havent enjoyed watching our games this much for years. It may change, and if Megson goes back to our Fulham/Everton tactics I will be the first to get on his back. If you would have asked me that when we were bottom of the league when Megson came in, the answer would have been yes. Actually, the answer is yes now, because Liverpool at home is a game that we are capable of winning. Out of interest Julie, do you think we will get relegated? bwfc 1210, you cant keep repeating the same stuff about where we were. LSL went after about 9 games, there were only about 27 points up for grabs. Quite a few clubs incl Spurs were near us. Megson has had nearly 20 games to get things right, yet we still hover 1 win above bottom 3.

Im not sure if we will go down- we might. Even if we just survive, I dont want Megson. He is far too negative, keeps faith with out of form players, puts his own buys on the bench to justify the signings when there are Internationals who get nowhere near the squad.

Ramos and Bruce have better records at Wigan and Spurs.

Come on, you know deep down he has never been any good and I dont think he ever will be.

Of course not Julie. Just want to get a balanced view from people who actually saw the whole game. Which apart from the awful refereeing and scoreline was a good game for us and the Manager. Lots of enjoyable, skillful attacking play to cheer and mostly good solid organised defence. Look at the stats of shots on goal, greatly improved. Read the papers tomorrow - we will get praised by most intelligent pundits, I am sure of that.

So would I but unlike you I realise that is easier said than done - just ask Spurs, Newcastle, etc etc. You dont always get what you deserve but I'm not aware of a manager who can come in and guarantee 3 points every game. The trouble is you dont always get what you deserve in football matches, its not like rugby where you can just a kick a ball unchallenged over sticks to keep away (what a joke scoreline that was) and like Big Sam's 1-0 away wins last season. I can see beyond the scoreline, I want us to win yes but even more than that I want to look forward to going to our matches. Did you really enjoy watching us play under Big Sam?

I know that all the Bolton fans were singing "Ginger Mourinho" today, because I was at the match, and the SUPPORTERS showed their support for the manager, as supporters should.

You say that I know deep down he has never been any good and you don't think he ever will be. Firstly, look at his signings.

Cahill - Gave away a penalty today but had a decent game. Been brilliant since he's joined.

Steinsson - Gave a penalty away but it wasn't a foul, and has looked solid in every performance for us.

Taylor - Not had his shooting boots on, but he is getting into some great positions and will be a very good player for us.

Cohen - Not looked great in his performances, but hasn't had a proper chance yet.

Rasiak - Scored today, wrongly disallowed. Not seen enough of him to comment.

If Megson had been manager in the summer, he would have had more time to find players and improve the team, as he has done in January.

You mention Ramos and Bruce having better records, if you remember we attempted to get Bruce, but he didn't want to come, and I can't imagine that Ramos would have come. You wanted Sammy Lee out, yet there was nobody realistically who would have came in and done a better job than Megson is doing currently.

Megson has turned things around since he came, we are the furthest we've ever been in the UEFA Cup. He has guided us from bottom of the table, to 16th.

If we get relegated, fair enough, you might have been right about him, but anyone with any sense will realise there is no chance that we will be relegated.

As for the upcoming fixtures:
Liverpool (home) - could win
Wigan (away) - could/should win
Man City (home) - could/should win
Arsenal (home) - expected to lose, but generally do well against arsenal.

I can't see too many problems for us. I cant imagine what you would be like if you were a Reading fan, they are in trouble, they have lost their last 8 games in a row. We will be safe this season.

The team wasnt negative today, we had more chances than Blackburn, don't criticise the tactics if you weren't there.

A month ago we didnt know how we could win a game, because we werent good enough. Now its clear that we can win games, the last 2 league games have shown that, we should easily have 4 points more than we have. When we lost to Blackburn at home they were clearly the better team, now I am confident that we are at least a match for most teams.

You called his tactics negative. If you were at the game today, you will have seen that we were not.

I'll take it by my "little pet" you meant Nolan, purely because you said he nearly got sent off twice. In reply to that, I would say, IF YOU WERE AT THE GAME, you would have seen that his performance was good, with many breaking runs from midfield and tackles put in. Unlike your "little pet" Guthrie.

an excellent balanced post. 2 little things i do semi -disagree with. megson is over cautious /negative. a) because of his bench selections today and b) 'cos we only really gave 'em it both barrels attacking -wise when we were alredy behind. granted when we were 1-1 we did continue attacking. just conceding that 2nd pen set us back. we have to then push fwd and it leaves gaps and the scoreline then flatters bl'burn as they exploit those gaps.
the 4-4-2 variation at reading worked well with helguson to actually have 2 strikers up there ,with still another striker rasiak on the bench. and still option to push davo wide if need to defend it out for a spell in a 4-5-1 as we did. pity helguson got inj again as he has a handy record of scoring with 2 goals in his only 2 starts. lets hope davo gets on a run of form as he's cert due a run.

If you have such a great life, great job etc why do you feel the need to constantly appear on a forum of a club you dont support and post offensive comments which are obviously designed to deliberately annoy and upset people.

You are a sad man with an obviously unsatisfactory home life whose only pleasure appears to be to upset other people. I feel soory for your wife, assuming you havent made this up as well

As for the upcoming fixtures: Liverpool (home) - could win Wigan (away) - could/should win Man City (home) - could/should win Arsenal (home) - expected to lose, but generally do well against arsenal. I can't see too many problems for us. I cant imagine what you would be like if you were a Reading fan, they are in trouble, they have lost their last 8 games in a row. We will be safe this season. The team wasnt negative today, we had more chances than Blackburn, don't criticise the tactics if you weren't there.
Could/should?,take a look at Readings games to come i would swap!.
Look at readings form, you wouldn't swap.

I never said I didn't rate him, I said that he has done nothing for the last couple of months. I think he has potential, but needs to improve his end product and consistency. And he did play in centre midfield today.

And the reason we are arguing is because whenever you comment on here, it always seems to be negative, even after wins. I think everyone else realises that as well.

We haven't got anybody, or had anybody up to the quality of Djorkaeff or Okocha. They were pure class.

I had a little look at some of the comments on here and we seem to be going down the same old line. Slag off the manager, individual players and each other.

We looked good at times today but we are playing our strikers on the wing and lobbing balls to no one.

We have a small squad in terms of depth and we are asking a lot of some players.

We are in a relegation battle and I think we have the edge over the six teams that are also in it because we have players that are on a good contract in the premiership and others that give it a 110% even if it does not look like it to us fans.

Those boys played well today and got a kick in the teeth from the off (Cheers Battenberg). Let’s get over it because moaning will not get us a point.

Yeah we have the big guns next, BUT as far as I am concerned this bunch seem to play better in the big games (FOR SOME ODD REASON)
Liverpool are conceding, big time at the moment! Think we could grab something in that one.
Arsenal are having a massive dip in form and have just lost a good striker. (Get well soon by the way, it was a horrific injury)
Well we can sit here and fight and its always good to debate on an open forum but this team do not need criticism at this time! They need support and that is what we are, SUPPORTERS. You guys, not me have been abroad and taken a kicking for this club, so don’t let it be for nothing.
Lets pack that stadium out like we did against Madrid and give them the boost they so obviously need at this time.

Hate to use the word but let’s be united!! FANS UNITED!!

I think your right; he inherited a team from BS AND LS. He needs time and if we go down it will not be his fault. Where were we and where were we going the day he took over?
His record so far is not bad reading plus he and the player’s are providing better football than I have seen Bolton play in a long while.
If we stay up and he keeps hold of players, which we have an inability to do and gets in a good right winger and striker I think we will be in business.

I bet when most of you are out with your fellow Bolton supporters you are actually quite critical of whats going on. Very often at half time, all you can hear is discontented fans so I am sure I am not alone in the views I hold. Just that Ive got the guts to say something about it.

You so called fans are just nerds keep trotting out stats which you think convinces other people that we are actually a good team. This Europe thing is a smokescreen. Megson tried to lose it several times for us, and only a very late Stelios goal against a rubbish Greek team kept us in it.

I will be there on Sunday shouting and cheering like I always do, but I'm not stupid enough to blindly support every decision made by the club. We lost again yesterday and are on another bad run. Blaming refs or whoever does not disguise this. We have the players to win matches at the club. Some we never see, others are played out of position. And the inability to select a consistent winning team is why I believe Megson fails as he always has.

If Megson hadn't arrived, then someone else would have done and as we have no idea who that would have been, we can't judge him. We can only see what Meggers has done. I admire how he has steaded the defence, but am really worrried at our inability to hit the onion bag. Unless we can get some more goals quickly it is going to go to the wire- which at Stamford Bridge won't be pretty.

2:41pm Mon 25 Feb 08

The main problem we have at the moment is that we do not utilise our bench take yesterday we had a goalkeeper a defensive midfielder a defender and a player which is not up to the premiership. We have a tried and tested midfielder in stelios who is more than capable of putting the ball in the back of the net, a midfield runner in andrelik who appears to be overlooked and Vaz Te who is capable of opening up defenders because of his pace. We settle for Cohen who needs time to adapt to the premiership and thats being generous Raziak who looked the part for 10 mins and joey obrien who is a little light weight in midfield to be effective. Nolan sometimes allows the game to pass him by without being involved yet the system is at fault at times having all the players in defence for corners aned throw ins does not allow players that are not speed merchants to break and having no outlet balls cost us in energy levels. Kevin davies was praised by the spanish for his work rate and endeavor however, he needs support as it is easy for 5 defenders to take care of one and maybe two at the front. It would be more interesting if we had a plan A B OR C and not just plan A. We need to show some bottle at times as the players preformance when we went 2-1 down was not up to standard and Blackburn capitilised on the teams inability to have a go.

Julie Moores, Bolton says...
3:00pm Mon 25 Feb 08

Newshound, I fully agree with you about Sammy Lee. Perhaps where we disagree is that I do not think Gary Megson will be a good short or long term manager for this club.

I really hope Im wrong because I would like us to stay in the Prem, not have a slow fall down the leagues. I would have much preferred other Managers when Lee left, but presume we have to stick by him until the end of the season.

Im OK having a footy chat with anyone cos I am passionate about BWFC. During the 90 mins I am like a loon cheering them on when we score, groaning when we miss. On this forum, I dont see why everyone gets so upset if I share my views on players/managers. Its the 90 minute support that counts, not just at home but away as well. Ive been to 5 away matches incl Munich so do feel I do my bit.

All the sexist name calling just passes me by now, its just a little sad. Sure I go a bit overboard sometimes, often get things wrong. But it is a game of opinions. None of us are right or wrong all of the time, just wish we could have more decent debates on here.

Julie everyone is entitled to their opinion and many fans feel the constant NEGATIVE comments you bring to this forum are just plain not needed. I can reflect on most gameS we have had under Megson and say YES there has been an improvement but after the first 4 games i think you was calling for his head!!!! Un-just most would agree if you not having a go at the players or Manager it's then directed with clever witted post's on here to us fans. You know what i mean, Regardless if you go to the matches or not doesn't make you less of a fan. It just surprises me that you only resurface when we lose and the odd occassion you come on (on the day) when we have drawn or won. You mention sometimes you get your call wrong well with what us Bolton fans have had to deal with this season the up's and down's i feel Premiership football is a must next season and agree we are to good to go down but IF we do get relegated i will still be a fan as i have for over 30 years!!! My club isn't a fashion statement, it's for life and again i state i don't come on here just to have a go at you!!! It's just your like a broken record, keep banging on about the same thing. Get a life or a chill pill or something i think when you mention "you will be happy if............." let's face it you never will be happy, someone has vexed you big time and passion for our beloved club going off all posts spells out to me that you have lost that loving feeling!!! Keeping the faith ALWAYS!!!!!

Everybody needs to take a step back, relax and realise that everybody as an opinion. Julie made her points of view known, wether they are right or wrong is open to debate, but at least respect her right to say it.
No one on this forum should harrass or insult another, we're all supposed to be Wanderers supporters. Yes i realise you get the odd moron from other clubs on here and they are fair game, but the rest of us should stick together.

Thanks Devon White. We are all in it together and many of us hold very passionate views.
I will never apologise for saying that I am unhappy about lots of things at the Reebok this season:-
Managers
Team Selection
Formations

But theyre only my opinions, nobody has died because of them. What is always odd is that whatever I say, there will be some who just come on to say " rubbish " or " you make me sick " etc. Another 20 posters will come on amd make the exact same points, nothing gets said. Price of fame I guess !! Lol.
