Megson in fans tribute

GARY Megson has voiced his appreciation and sympathy for the efforts of Wanderers' supporters, many of whom have been badly treated on the club's UEFA Cup campaign.

The Bolton boss described the treatment of some fans at the last two away games - in Belgrade and Madrid - as "bang out of order" and is hoping there will be no repeat when they travel to Portugal to play Sporting Lisbon in a fortnight.

He conceded that while players do not have first-hand experience of some of the hardship supporters face on their trips abroad, they still appreciate the lengths they go to in support of their team.

"We realise the supporters spend their own money to get there," Megson said.

"They don't fly in the same aircraft we do, they don't stay in the hotels we do, but any of these players, if they were going on holiday, would expect to be treated right and supporters should be treated right.

"When you look at some of the things that happen, I'm sure players don't realise the way that it is.

"I went to watch a game abroad a couple of weeks back and you get frisked before you go in. We never see that, but supporters are suffering that.

"The things that have happened in the last two European games have been completely out of order."

You are NOT WRONG there Gary. Let's see the club DO something and not let this treatment we have suffered get swept under the UEFA carpet.

Nothing will happen.
Its always the same which ever club is involved.
The only solution is to stay away.
The Spanish only tolerate us for our money at the best of times.

Yeah, not a bad thing when you fly first class and stay in 5* hotels.

Club would be more inclined to do something had the team been affected, but seeing as it's 'only' the fans then they'll do a lot of shouting, but I doubt anything will ACTUALLY be achieved through their protestations.

Boycott spanish holidays and the fruit and veg at the local supermarkets.

It has on country of origin. Hurt them in their pocket internally.

When the spanish government lose revenue through less taxes paid because we stopped taking holidays there only then will they realise they need to do something about it.

For me its clear.

C'mon Rocky, I doubt whether the Spanish cops will lessen their stance on the treatment of away fans at football if Morrison's reports a drop in sales of cartons of Sangria.

Hi Guys ,
If you want to meet Joey O'Brian and Danny Guthrie tonight (THursday 28th Feb.)and possibly another hard hitting local celebrity, then get down to the Platinum Suite at 7.45 tonight to the BWSA auction, where, Colin "THe Voice of the Reebok" will be in charge. Items to be auctioned include A signed Amir Kann glove, a Athletico Madrid programme (Wanderers v Athletico) signed by all the Madrid players, Wanderers items and books signed by Nat Lofthouse and some players, bottle of House of Commons wine signed by the Prime Minister, a Peter Kay original script donated by Dave Spikey, several Burnden Park items and several authenticated Coronation Street items and signed photos. It's a charity auction for a good cause, so get down there even if you are not a member I'm sure you will get in for a reasonable "joining" fee.

ERM if tens of thousands of BOLTON PEOPLE BOYCOTT spanish holidays which MANY go to and that lost revenues up to £1500 per family is removed from the Spanish government then it will put the message across.

Oranges from seville, Fruit Juices bought in supermarkets and other product such as olives are big income earners for spain.

Government never like being hit in the pockets.

IF tens of thousands of Bolton people stop buying spanish goods, products and holidays. This will FORCE the spanish government to take on board the concerns of our towns plight on going to football matches away.

IT will also make future places like lisbon think twice about heavy handedness if they know the fans can start a boycott which hurts the country financially.

You forget our currency is worth more than the EURO.

You can always holiday in Greece.

I watched a Pedro Almodovar film last night, he is partly Spanish, I must be part of the problem then eh?

C'mon Rocky, surely you have better things to be doing with your time, than avoiding eating oranges and cartons of Sangria.

Ok im sorry for being Mr negative and i have every sympathy for the way our fans were treated in the last two European outings, but how on earth do you expect a few (and by a few i mean max of a thousand people) to halt the Spanish economy! that's the most barbaric comment ive seen on here for ages! a few thousand quid is not going to effect them in the slightest!

RockyReturns, says...
11:50am Thu 28 Feb 08

Tens of thousands of people from Bolton Go to Spain every year.

Spending at least 1500 each.

If we said 30,000 over a 12 month period minimum then that's worth at least 1 billion to the spanish economy.

Here from some official statistic from 2005

"
The burgeoning business of the Low Cost Carriers (LCCs)
helped to boost the number of tourists, generating 15.3
million tourism entries in a total of 116,000 flights. The
passengers on flights of this type represented 29.7% of
the total of arrivals by air (51.4 million), 30.8% more than
in the same period of 2004, in keeping with the growth
rates of recent years"

Add to that the lack of sales from spanish Wine ,Olive,Oranges and they would soon get the message.

So billions of the countries income is affected by us booking holidays there.

If we boycott the holidays it sends a strong message to the Spanish government we will not tolerate their Police beating up our innocent women and children.

Why would relegation come into the equasion its a fact that we are in the mire as most of our points won under megson has come when we have been active in europe. Most of our dropped points have come when the UEFA cup was in mid season break. Winning is the best way forward and choosing a settled team also is the best way of avoiding relegation.

Rocky how does that work?, if we boycott Spanish holidays and goods.
Years ago animal rights groups tried to get people to ban/boycott anything Spanish to try and get the Spanish authorities to ban bull fighting, and as there are more animal lovers than football supporters I don't recall their economy being in freefall.

I was at the match, and the Spanish police behaved worse than any football hooligans I have ever seen.
Sadly any boycott will make no difference whatsoever.
Last weeks events will soon be a distant memory.
After Hillsborough, the scousers Boycotted "The Sun", still on sale today.......
Govenments only pay attention to worldwide condemnation, like in South Africa.

British tourists account for nearly 30% of the tourist trade in Spain.

A small dent wouldn't hurt but make them sit up a little.

But, on a brighter note - I quite admire you for your hounding of the perverse creature that is 'Filth Eric'. Sad t*** no mates. Keep on with the good work.

Rocky, I think you are spot on. The only power we have in this country and even more so abroad is as consumers. Economics is based on very small margins, 1% here and there is the difference between boom and recession. Its the old saying " if you get good service you tell one person, if you get bad tell ten". Keep up the good work!

I have been to Marsaille, Munich and now Madrid watching the wanderers (this season - many other places previous) Madrid was by far the best place as a city and came close to matching the Bayern fans - the Spanish Ultras are the police with a given right to beat the S**T out of anyone who is not spanish and seem to be enjoying themselves doing it.
LOVED every minute of my trip - Spain as holiday (definitely Madrid ) shove it.
Portugal here we come
