Whites players hail survival

Comments (66)A CAUTIOUS Gary Megson has put the celebrations on hold, but there is no doubt among the players and fans that the Whites are staying up.
Saturday's victory over Sunderland, combined with defeats for close rivals Birmingham and Reading means that only a miracle can send Wanderers down now.
Jubilant Bolton supporters chanted "We are staying up!" as a statement of fact rather than an expression of hope while the smiles on the faces of the players as they left the field and emerged from the dressing room was a clear sign that they knew they would not be caught.
They go to Chelsea on Sunday, knowing nothing short of a mathematical catastrophe can deny them an eighth successive season of top flight football - a remarkable achievement considering they looked down and out after losing 4-0 at Aston Villa a month ago.
Since that morale-shattering defeat, they have taken 10 points from a possible 12 and left Fulham, Birmingham and Reading facing a nerve-wracking final day.
"Three or four weeks ago, we were written off - we hadn't won in eight games," said Kevin Davies, who returned from a two-match ban to give a typically brave performance with a light splint on his broken hand.
"To turn it round is unbelievable.
"Only goal difference can change things now, so we'll go down to Chelsea and put 10 men behind the ball and, hopefully that will be OK."
Gary Cahill, who joined Wanderers in a £5million transfer from Aston Villa in January, spurning an offer from Birmingham, played a major role in a defence that conceded just one goal in the last four games, when all seemed lost.
"Even when things were going badly, I was enjoying my time here," said the 22-year-old centre-back.
"But, obviously this is the league I wanted to be in. This is why I came to Bolton.
"This has made my decision even better, so I'm very, very happy."
Skipper Kevin Nolan praised the fans for getting behind the team when they were needed and urged them to take advantage of the club's free coach travel offer and fill the visitors' section at Stamford Bridge.
"I would like to thank all our supporters who have been great all season," he said.
"In recent weeks when we've really needed to get the results, they have responded to our calls.
"All the lads are grateful. We'd like to take the full 3,000 down to Chelsea and for as many fans to take advantage of our free coach offer as possible. We want them there so that we can finish off the job and hopefully get a result against Chelsea on their own patch.
"This was a massive result. We've got to where we wanted to be. It's been absolutely fantastic what we've achieved, especially over the last four games.
"We were written off, and rightly so, after we were hammered by Aston Villa but we had a chat and asked ourselves Do we want to be known as the team that took Bolton Wanderers down after all the success we've had over the last four or five years?' "We know we are not mathematically safe but we are a long way down that road to being safe.
"Thank God all of the hard work behind the scenes has got us into this position. The pressure was on us to produce and we did.
"It would have been a disaster if we had gone down."

John Collins is a good shout, but what about Phil Brown (assuming Hull dont get promoted) Hes a bolton lad and the football hes got Hull playing is terrific. In a poor division hes gone against the grain of 1 up front and lumping it, instead opting for fast attacking football. How good would it be to see the wanderers with two wingers, and strikers, and actually attacking, rather than lumping it

Looking forward to next season, I was wondering what are the distinct qualities needed by contemporary managers of modest Premier League clubs like Wanderers.
I believe there are three distinct quality streams:
- To have a high level of personal charisma, and thereby have the ability to attract top-rated players usually not available to the club because of budgetary reasons. Woven into this, the force of character to be able to manage and motivate these players to constantly win games.
- The technical ability to make creative and strategic team selections, and telling substitutions in difficult on-field circumstances that constantly wins games.
- The ability to work with the club's board to capture an appropriate budget to run the team. Also, if possible, good communication skills and an excellent media presence, although some managers have survived without the last part of this quality stream and been successful.
You might notice that at no time have I mentioned coaching, or training. If you want a coach, hire one! Just running round the training field with a beany-hat and tracksuit on will not win you games!
We must ask these questions:
Is Gary Megson fit for purpose at Bolton Wanderers?
And if he stays in place are we doomed to a bottom five relegation struggle again next season?

thing is though do you really think anything will change at the reebok this summer??????? i think after the chelsea game ther will be a massive pr/propaganda exercise to brand this season as a success and megson a genius, which will make most fans forget about how badly run weve been, and well be in for more of the same next season
id love to see these managerial changes but i cant see them happening, unless someone takes over the club, and i cant see much fact in these consortium rumours

No great disaster, there were far fewer season ticket holders at Burnden.
The strategy should now be to reduce matchday prices to entice the working man supporter back as the experiment with family packages has proved a failure.These people see football as a theatre-like experience where they sit back to be "entertained"

As I about to be banned from this website due to spamming it a few weeks ago because I was sick to death of being bullied whilst the paper took NO ACTION here goes - and yet the papaers see free and easy to close these comments at a small whim!
I have never liked Megson, he is completely the wrong person for the job - very negative etc...
Gartside - again I have NEVER liked before during and after Allardyce. The sooner this joker goes the better.

Since the PLAYERS meeting they haven't lost so take 10pts off megsons total from the 36 and take the 5pts that lsl got makes 21pts now divide that by 24 games now times that by 38 and what do you get???

Don't wish to disapoint all you Megson callers but he has acheived what he was employed for,that is keeping us up,albeit by the skin of his teeth,but now he deserves at least the 1st 10 games of next season to see if there is any improvement on this season,if there is, well credit to him,15 plus points in these games would guarentee him more time,i for one would wish him luck because you never know we could be the team that he makes successful,credit to everyone involved with BWFC for the last 4 games to pull a miracle off.COME ON YOU WHITES.....

Just want the best for bwfc but some people on here want to give megson another chance.
you don't like collins but i would never go paul jewell. he's very limited and has done plenty but mainly keeping his teams in the bottom three or four, so his track record is very poor.
we want quality/ tactically astute manager. somebody to inspire the fans.

I would like more attractive football with more passion like the Rioch days .
Unfortunately sammy lee has got everybody thinking we can't be more pleasing on the eye.

As far as I am aware testimonials were given to players who had ten years continual service at you club. The money would then be given to the player from the gate reciepts for his loyalty and to help him in his future life. In my opinion there are no need for testimonials in the premier league as (1) they dont need the money and (2) loyalty is a very rare commodity, just ask Anelka and Diuoffy
