WANDERERS remained on course to confirm Premier League survival after a goalless first half at title-chasing Chelsea.

Virtually guaranteed safety prior to kick-off, Gary Megson's side just had to avoid a heavy defeat at Stamford Bridge, and hope relegation rivals Reading do not win by a cricket score against Derby, to ensure another season of top-flight football.

Didier Drogba went closest to breaking the deadlock for Chelsea, who hoped to pip Manchester United for the league, but he blazed Michael Ballack's cross over from close range on eight minutes before seeing his 21st-minute free-kick curl inches wide.

In between the Blues striker going close, John Terry was stretchered off with a suspected broken arm following a collision with his own goalkeeper Petr Cech.
