GARY Megson remained defiant on his team selection after watching his side go tumbling out of the Carling Cup at the hands of League One Northampton Town.
The Wanderers boss defended his decision to drop both Kevin Nolan and Kevin Davies to the bench for last night’s 2-1 defeat, claiming both players were still carrying injuries from the weekend game at Newcastle.
Andy O’Brien was also relegated to the bench, and all three emerged from the dugout, ultimately too late to prevent an embarrassing exit at the hands of the Cobblers.
Five changes were made in all to the weekend’s line-up, but Megson had no qualms about the quality of the side that took the field.
“The changes we made were Johan Elmander who has a hamstring problem, Matty Taylor who has a broken bone in his toe and Kevin Nolan who had a calf problem.
“Kevin Davies played with a stiff neck against Newcastle and we didn’t want to make it any worse. If he and Elmander were out, people would be crowing about that.
“When you play these games there is always an eye on the next Premier League game. In hindsight, I still wouldn’t do anything different.”
