WANDERERS Reserves had Ariza Makukula’s hat-trick to thank for a thrilling win at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The Whites second string came from behind three times before Makukula’s 88th minute strike ended their run of 10 games without victory.
The result also gives them a glimmer of hope in their bid to avoid finishing rock-bottom of the Premier Reserve League North, ahead of Liverpool, who have played two games less than the Wanderers. The Reebok outfit, full of first team fringe players, had to contend with Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing who ran the game, scoring a hat-trick of his own before he faded in the last 20 minutes.
Spearing opened his account with the game only four minutes old, but Makukula, pictured, levelled seven minutes later. The Liverpool man – dubbed the reserve team’s Steven Gerrard – struck again on 25 minutes, but his strike was cancelled out by Tamir Cohen’s 40th minute equaliser.
Spearing put Liverpool 3-2 up from the penalty spot a minute before the interval after Sebastien Puygrenier was ajudged to have fouled Krisztian Nemeth in the area.
Makukula made it 3-3 on 68 minutes and, just as the match looked to be drifting towards stalemate, he struck again with two minutes remaining.
