Bury Broncos 22 Bolton Mets 36

RUGBY LEAGUE: Bolton Mets returned to winning ways as they proved too strong for neighbours Bury Broncos in Saturday’s derby duel.

The victory means the Mets moved to within two points of the leaders and continued their 100 per cent away record.

A bright start by Bolton saw captain Mark Dorning celebrate his birthday in style with the opening try following a strong run at the defensive line and dummy to score under the posts.

Winger Adam Ryan then benefited from a fumble by Bury and went on to score in the corner to give the Mets a 10-0 lead early in the half. Some quick thinking by Bury saw them hit back with a try, as hooker Chris Radford dived over having taken a quick-tap penalty.

As Bury had possession deep in their own half, a breakaway led to a full-length try for Phil Bygrave as the Mets defence faltered to bring the scores level.

As Bolton restarted, the kick ricocheted off a Bury player, back into the hands of Joe Harte and, with a trademark barnstorming run, he bumped off several defenders to put the Mets back in front.

With the half almost over, Bury took the initiative again when Chris Ready’s chip led to a try for Matt Hindley as the two side’s went in level at half-time.

After the break centre Neil Walsh went on a run from dummy half to score for Bolton from 10 yards out.

With the Mets looking to take the game to Bury, some indiscipline from the visitors handed the Broncos a penalty close to the line, and a carbon copy of the try in the first half, saw Radford dive over to score with Bolton again arguing with the referee.

Bury now had the lead for the first time in the game while Bolton coach Paul Wilcock needed something or someone to turn the game. The Mets went back to basics with some strong driving forward with ball security, and it started to take its toll on the home side as Bolton regained the lead. Paul Wilcock was the man to put Bolton back in front with two close-range efforts as the forwards had set the platform.

A 50-yard solo effort from man-of-the-match Dave Bruen saw him seal the win for Bolton and put an end to the the Broncos’ chances of a comeback.

The Mets have no game this weekend. Training is on Thursday from 7pm at Little Lever School.
