GARY Megson has told frustrated full-back Paul Robinson: “Go and earn your place in the team.”
The Wanderers boss has confirmed that the former West Brom defender will come in for the suspended Jlloyd Samuel against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Robinson started the first two games of the season but his only appearance since has been as a substitute in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat against Chelsea.
And Megson has challenged the 30-year-old to snatch his chance, after admitting he has been disappointed with his lack of first team action so far.
“He has been frustrated because he has come in and wants to play first team football,” the manager said. “No-one can expect to play. If they play well, and the team is doing well with them in it, then they can expect to be in for the next one.
“Just because they come in from another club, they can’t just expect to go straight into the team and stay there. Jlloyd has done particularly well and has played the best stuff since I have been here. But now he is suspended, Paul will get that opportunity. They are all treated exactly the same.”
Megson has called his defensive line in for extra training sessions this week, after seeing Wanderers fail to keep a Premier League clean sheet since May.
“The people in the back four and the goalkeeper are all good players,” he said. “And in some cases, their strength is on the ball, even though they are defenders.
“But we have got to get better. It needs to be addressed and I have got them coming in an hour before everyone else because we have got some work to do.”
