LEIGH Genesis are hoping to transfer their fantastic home form to the road when they visit Ashton Athletic in the Lancashire Trophy tonight.
Garry Flitcroft’s men are unbeaten at the Leigh Sports Village this season and Saturday’s comfortable 2-0 win over Trafford saw them climb to sixth in the UniBond League First Division North table.
It was a dominant display by the hosts and Flitcroft is delighted with the way his charges are taking to their new home.
“We totally dominated Trafford in the first half and should have been 4-0 up by half-time,” he said.
“We then went on to create chance after chance in the second half, scoring two and having one disallowed. The lads were fantastic and, on another day, we could have won by six or seven.
“We’re unbeaten at home so far this season and the lads are flying at the moment. Confidence is really high throughout the side.
“It was an outstanding performance on Saturday, but in particular Tom Ince, Karl Munroe, Kris King and Dale Whitham were stand-out players.”
Flitcroft has been dealt a blow, however, with the news that leading scorer Chris Baguley has moved to league rivals Salford City.
He scored 11 goals in 17 games, although ten of these were as a substitute — the decisive factor in the striker’s decision.
“Chris wanted regular starts,” said Flitcroft. “He is the sort of player that really needed that but unfortunately this could not always be possible with my current squad.
“I would have loved Chris to stay here but his decision is made and I of course wish him all the best.”
Last year’s Lancashire Trophy finalists Radcliffe Borough bid to progress past the second round of this year’s competition when they entertain UniBond Premier League side Burscough tonight, kick off 7.45pm.
The tie, which was postponed last week, has forced the cancellation of tonight’s scheduled UniBond Division One North match at Skelmersdale United.
The Stainton Park side closed their internet forum following a wave of negative postings over recent performances.
Meanwhile, director of football Gerry Luczka was battling injuries, suspensions and non-availability of players before Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to an in-form Warrington Town.
Elsewhere, Daisy Hill travel to Marine tonight looking to spring a major upset in the same competition.
The Vodkat NW Counties Division One side, who take on Armthorpe in the Second Round of the FA Vase at New Sirs on Saturday, will be underdogs at the Arriva Stadium where the UniBond Premier Division side beat Bamber Bridge 4-2 in the first round.
A waterlogged pitch forced the postponement of the tie last week.
Atherton LR, who suffered successive postponements last week because of the weather, entertain Bacup Borough tonight in the NW Counties Premier Division.
