GOLF: Bolton's oldest golfer plans to celebrate his 90th birthday today “with a few holes”.
Jack Baxendale, a member at Bolton Old Links since 1949, is still active on the course playing two or three rounds a week, and has no plans to retire from the game.
He began as a youngster at Shaw Hill Golf Club, where his father used to graze sheep on the course. But after coming out of the RAF after the Second World War spent two years at Horwich before moving on to Old Links. Jack used to play off four handicap and represented the Old Links in BGA team matches and has a couple of board competitions to his name.
Now he plays alongside Old Links stalwarts including current president Malcolm Digner, Walter Gregory and Arnold Bolton.
He added: “I try to play two or three times a week unless it is cold weather.
“I hope to get a few holes in on my birthday and take a couple of pounds off the president.”
