GOLF: THE winter competitions are coming to a close at Bolton Old Links with the sixth and final round of the Eclectic Medal played on Saturday.
With 18 full holes in operation, the Old Links course is in remarkably good condition considering the recent harsh winter and all is set fair for the new season which officially starts with the Captain’s drive-in on March 27.
Alan Buckley (82-13=69) and Steve Jackson (76-7=69) mastered the windy but dry conditions to win the Division One competition (handicaps 0 to 13) with Stephen Fathers a close third with a net 70 (78-8).
The Division Two (handicaps 14 to28) was won by Jack Mullard with an impressive net 65 (80-15). Ged Hull, Peter Lightbown, Eric Carruthers and Graham Ellis tied for second place with net 69s.
The final of the Winter Fourball Knockout trophy was also played the weekend, and capped an excellent two days for Steve Jackson who, partnered by Tony Johnson, triumphed over Simon Whittaker and Michael Tunstall in a closely contested match that was only decided after extra holes.
Meanwhile, Bolton Open Golf Club at Harwood is offering special deals to attract golfers to sign up for a year.
A 12 months seven-day membership is just £220 with £200 for a five-day membership and £50 for juniors.
Pay to play costs £10 per round at the weekend and £8 in midweek. The driving range has been closed.
