SAMMY Lee did not mince words when he was put on the spot at the after-match press conference yesterday.
The first question fired at him was: "There are rumours that the game was Sam Allardyce's last as manager of Bolton Wanderers."
Lee, obviously startled by the statement, quickly replied: "Well, I wasn't expecting that question, but if there are things being said, I've certainly not heard them.
"Frankly, I know nothing about it."
Allardyce's decision not to attend the conference probably added some fuel to the rumour, but Lee dismissed it out of hand and went on to talk about the match, and the season in general.
The assistant manager was keen to talk up the efforts of the last eight months, but missing out on Europe next year was obviously a big disappointment after Newcastle's 1-0 win over Chelsea beat Wanderers to the one Intertoto Cup place.
"Overall we had another good season but then there was the blip of five defeats, which ultimately cost us," said Lee.
"It's a blow not to be in Europe next year. The players and all the backroom staff wanted to be a part of it again next season, but it's the fans I really feel for.
"They had their first taste of Europe last year and loved every minute of it, and we're just sorry we couldn't do it again for them."
One player who will definitely be around next season is Ricardo Vaz Te, whose goal was enough to beat Birmingham yesterday.
"He has terrific potential," said Lee, "and hopefully we will see more and more of that over the next few years.
"Sam has realised that potential, and Ricardo is one of a number of assets we have.
"One thing is certain, Ricardo will become an integral part of this football club over the next few years if he keeps progressing."
