SNOOKER: Local starlet Zac Barton had good cause to celebrate his 16th birthday after being selected for the England Under-16s squad for the Home Internationals in September.
The call-up for the big event at the World Snooker Centre at Pontins, Prestatyn, capped a successful year for the Bolton youngster, who has risen up the rankings and made his mark as one of the game’s most promising players, at home and abroad.
Now practising full time at Bolton Snooker Club after leaving Turton Media Arts College, Zac secured a place on the England Association of Snooker and Billiards Premier Junior Tour, reached the semi-finals of the European Under-17s Championships in Malta, featured in the last eight of the Rileys-sponsored Ronnie O’Sullivan Future Stars challenge during the World Championships at Sheffield and, after a string of impressive performances for Bolton Snooker Club, was named Player of the Year in the Bolton and District Snooker League.
Zac’s selection for the England U16s follows his appearance at the Home Internationals where he played for the B team, which has now been disbanded. And it coincides with his coach, John Farnworth, being named on the England coaching staff.
Sponsored by Concrete Drillings Services Ltd and CarMan Plastics Ltd, the Bolton youngster played so impressively at the Malta event that he has already been invited back for next January’s European individual championships by tournament director Vincente Pisani.
