Deering targets double success with Darcy boys

JIMMY Deering aims to lead Darcy Lever’s assault on the Bolton Association’s runners-up spot this weekend and become the second player in the league to reach 1,000 runs.

The Australian teenager needs just 16 runs to become the first non professional to reach the milestone.

Daisy Hill pro Asif Zakir was the first batsman to hit four figures and Deering’s nearest rival to hit 1,000 runs is another pro, Atherton’s Daniel Salpietro, who is 79 runs short.

With four games remaining, Darcy are involved in a tight race for second place with Blackrod who are two points ahead. Elton are eight points behind Darcy in fourth.

They will only have Deering for three of those games as he is due to return to Perth before the last game of the season.

But he intends to play his part for the club before he goes home, as well as wrap up the personal landmark.

“Since Little Hulton looked like they were going to win the league it’s been a big thing for us to get second,” said the 19-year-old. “All the guys are really keen to get it in the last few games.”

Darcy have a golden opportunity to keep the pressure on Blackrod this weekend when they travel to woodenspoonists Standish before hosting fourth-bottom Flixton 24 hours later.

Deering has been a key figure in his second year at the club and says a less successful first season stood him in good stead to push on this year.

“I just tried to get the team off to a good start each week and I’ve been able to produce one or two decent scores,” said Deering, who is unsure whether he will return next season.

“Last year was my first year over here and I didn’t do so well, getting just over 600. But it was good experience and gave me a good grounding. This year I’ve been able to absorb a bit more pressure and it’s gone much better.

“At the start of the season I thought I could have a pretty good go at getting 1,000 runs. Playing in England has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and to do it at 19-years-old has been a great experience.”

Little Hulton need just three points to wrap up the title and are at home to Elton tomorrow before travelling to Blackrod on Sunday.
