KEVIN Davies is confident the Wanderers attack is starting to find its feet after overpowering Orlando City in the second match of their United States tour.

Owen Coyle’s Whites, inspired by an impressive Martin Petrov, showed as much creativity and attacking intent as they had in defeat at Tampa three days earlier – but this time proved more clinical in front of goal.

And Davies believes the performance on the artificial surface at the 70,000-seater Citrus Bowl was a promising sign.

“We progressed from the other night,” the Reebok skipper said.

“We created a number of opportunities again and managed to take them.

“We’ve sharpened up and it was a great result. We are here to win games and put in good performances and the team is looking a lot sharper now.”

Petrov, who was making his first start of the tour, was a dominant figure in a first half, setting up the opening goal – a trademark Davies header on 18 minutes – then, after Darren Pratley had netted for the first time following his transfer from Swansea City to restore Wanderers lead after Orlando had equalised, the gifted Bulgarian got on the scoresheet himself.

It was a sublime finish from the former Manchester City man, whose 15-yard effort had home keeper Miguel Gallardo diving the wrong way.

Davies, who was delighted to open his pre-season account, was grateful to Petrov for his contribution.

“I don’t think I score enough headers, to be honest,” he told Wanderers’ official website.

“It was a great ball in from Martin and I managed to attack it and head it across goal and it crept in.

“He (Petrov) is fit, he’s strong and does all the right things. He’s a good pro and he’s looking sharp. There were good performances from all the boys and I’m sure the manager will be delighted.”

The match proved a relatively comfortable workout for Wanderers, who outclassed the USL Pro League side managed by former Everton and Manchester City striker Adrian Heath, although Orlando’s equaliser from Matt Luzinaris forced Coyle to make an unscheduled substitution with less than 30 minutes on the clock.

Zat Knight pulled up with a thigh injury in the build-up to the goal and was immediately withdrawn with Gary Cahill taking over alongside David Wheater at the heart of the defence. Davies suggested the artificial pitch may have contributed to Knight’s injury. “Zat felt his thigh,” he said. “I think it was only a precaution (that he was substituted), but you have to be careful on those surfaces because they are not what we are used to.”

Coyle, who made six changes to the side that started against Tampa, made two more at half time when Ivan Klasnic and Mark Davies replaced Robbie Blake and Fabrice Muamba, and again gave youngsters Tom Eaves, Tope Obadeyi, Mark Connolly and Rob Lainton a taste of the action.

Wanderers: Bogdan (Lainton 75), Robinson (Connolly 76), Alonso, Wheater, Knight (Cahill 28), Chung-Yong, Muamba (M Davies 46), Pratley, Petrov (Obadeyi 75), Blake (Klasnic 46), K Davies (Eaves 75). Subs not used: Jaaskelainen, Taylor.
