OWEN Coyle vowed to keep strengthening his squad after Wanderers made a stunning start to the season against QPR.

Efforts will be stepped up to land Shaun Wright-Phillips and David N’Gog this week, as the manager looks to build on a thrilling 4-0 victory at Loftus Road that ensured the club ended the weekend on top of the embryonic Premier League table.

Some of the Saturday morning pundits had predicted that Wanderers would struggle for goals this season, but there was little evidence of that as Gary Cahill, Ivan Klasnic and Fabrice Muamba all hit the back of the net, adding to Danny Gabbidon’s own goal.

And having already snapped up Tuncay on a season-long loan, Coyle believes he can add an even sharper attacking edge before the close of the transfer window.

“People lined up to tell us there was no Jack Wilshere, we’ll struggle, now they’re saying there’s no Daniel Sturridge or Johan Elmander,” the manager said. “We have to make sure we evolve, and if that means we have to change a few things, then that’s what we’ll do.

“People have seen we’re up against the champions of the Championship and then five of the top six in our next seven games and wrote us off. I don’t have a problem with that, it’s been happening my whole career.

“You’ve seen a great performance from a group of players we’ve still got to add a couple of names to, and a couple of injuries to come back in. When you think what happened in pre-season, it was an absolute credit to see what they did.

“We do need strength in depth, though, and after signing Tuncay I’d like to add another striker and a winger. You probably know who they are but finances will play a part in all that.”

Wright-Phillips is pondering a £2.5million move from Manchester City but also has an offer from Stoke City which potentially comes with a bigger salary.

The Whites are yet to discuss personal terms with N’Gog but expect to hear this week whether Liverpool are to accept an offer of around £3.75m for the Frenchman.

Coyle named two of his summer signings – Nigel Reo-Coker and Chris Eagles – from the start against QPR and gave another – Darren Pratley – his debut from the bench.

The manager claims his new arrivals will enable Wanderers to evolve their style but have also brought out the best in some of the existing squad, including goalscorer Muamba.

“There are goals in Fabrice’s game,” he said. “Everyone has had this perception of him as a defensive midfielder and I’ve tried to instil in him since I’ve been here that he has got more than that.

“You’ll remember his goal against Wigan, so he can do that kind of thing, it’s just about encouraging him to get forward. With Nigel Reo-Coker there, prepared to screen, pass and all the other clever stuff, it does give him a chance to push on.

“He made four or five similar runs in behind the strikers, which is great for us, because when Ivan or the skipper wins the ball up there, they have an outlet.”
