THE rain failed to dampen Spring View and Greenmount’s aspirations in their league’s cup competitions as both clubs battled through to the next round in re-arranged ties on Sunday.

Salman Nazar turned in a match-winning, all-round performance as Bolton Association form team Spring View booked their place in the semi-finals of the Cross Cup with a 65-run victory over Flixton in their delayed second-round match. Nazar contributed a valuable 29 in the Wigan side’s rather modest total of 154-9 in their 48 overs – Sean Brooks top-scoring with 30 – then took 6-37 as the visitors were bowled out for 89.

Yet Flixton looked well on course for victory when they reached 40 without loss in the eighth over, until Nazar turned the match on its head with his left-arm spin.

Opener Luke Perry anchored one end to keep the visitors in with a shout but with the last nine batsmen contributing just six runs – five went for ducks – he lacked support and his was eventually the last wicket to fall for 60.

Spring View, who moved up to fourth in the league table on Saturday, will be at home to Daisy Hill in the semi-finals on Sunday, July 15.

Elton are at home to Astley and Tyldesley in the other semi-final.

Greenmount followed up their 10-wicket win over Eagley in the Bolton League on Saturday by brushing Bradshaw aside in their re-arranged Hamer Cup tie.

Asif Zakir was the star with the bat, hammering 72 for the Brandlesholme Road side.

And Simon Woolford made sure Bradshaw had their work cut-out, smashing 39 not out at the end of the innings to help Greenmount post an imposing total of 164-5 in the reduced, 30-over game.

Only Anthony Jones (17) and Chris Wilson (10) were able to make it into double figures for Bradshaw in reply as they were skittled for 55.

Phil Heaton (4-22) and Mark Stewart (3-10) did the damage for Greenmount, who now go into the semi-final draw with Farnworth SC.

The other two places are still up for grabs after the matches between Eagley and Egerton, and Heaton and Horwich were abandoned for the second time due to rain.

Both outstanding second round matches have been re-arranged for Friday, weather permitting.

The Heaton v Horwich tie will start at 12.30pm and the Eagley v Egerton match is due to begin at 5pm.

The semi-finals are due to be played on Sunday, July 15, and the draw will be made by the Bolton League today.
