I THINK it is about time we let managers cool off after games before talking to the media.

I was not surprised to see Jose Mourinho handed an FA charge after his post-match comments following Chelsea’s home defeat to Southampton claiming his side are never awarded penalties.

He wears his heart on his sleeve and he was clearly emotional with his team not performing like it usually does.

I understand his frustrations but then I thought Southampton also had two good shouts for penalties in that game so you could argue both sides had reason to criticise Bobby Madley.

I think it was his first visit to Stamford Bridge to referee Chelsea – maybe it was a ‘Bridge too far’ for him on the day.

To be fair to Bobby, he has had a relatively good start to the season before this game and I think when he looks back at the DVD he will be disappointed with some of his decision-making in the key match decisions and also his positioning.

Southampton could have had a penalty when Virgil van Dijk had his shirt clearly pulled by Branislav Ivanovic.

You accept there is always a bit of that going on in the box and players want referees to let a lot go but when it is blatant then it is a clear penalty.

I think Bobby’s positioning was why he didn’t give it – he needed to have a clearer view.

Then the Sadio Mane one could also have been a penalty for Southampton but you could argue the way he goes down doesn’t help his case.

I think players have to take some responsibility if they make a meal of a challenge whether it is a foul or not and maybe that is the reason that one wasn’t awarded.

As for the Chelsea claim when Radamel Falcao goes down under goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg’s challenge, I don’t think anyone would complain if that was given.

He does put the ball wide and is already going down – maybe to minimise any contact.

But I can understand why Jose was frustrated.

He also had the same complaint about a lack of penalties last season and I sympathised with him.

Diego Costa was denied a clear penalty at Burnley early in the season and then Cesc Fabregas another at Southampton.

Things went against Jose then and he feels they have again so far this season, claiming referees don’t want to give his team penalties.

I think he maybe should have not vented his feelings to the media but then it is always going to be highly-charged straight after a defeat.

NEIL Lennon was also fired up after Bolton’s last-gasp defeat at QPR when he branded referee Darren Drysdale an ‘absolute disgrace’ after his display at Loftus Road.

Neil said it was a ‘biased’ display and that is why it has landed him in hot water with the FA and a misconduct charge.

I think he got away with one earlier in the season when he criticised Paul Tierney’s display at Blackburn. Knowing Paul, I think he would have accepted it was a bad day at the office and that may have swayed the authorities not to be harsh on Neil.

This time he was not as fortunate.

With Darren, you either get a good display or a bad one and by all accounts from those at the game it was the latter this time.

Like Jose, though, Neil wears his heart on his sleeve and when you are down the bottom and not getting results, you feel everything is against you and lash out.

For me, though, you have to question the appointment by the Football League of Darren to a Bolton game when you consider Neil made a complaint about him after the 4-2 defeat at Rotherham last season.

It is not like the Premier League where the same officials are rotated – there have been referees who have not been appointed to a team for some time after a complaint.

Neil was naturally disappointed on Saturday and showed his emotions afterwards.

Again, you can understand that after being 2-0 up and then losing with the last kick of the game – particularly with how things have gone away from home for Bolton this season.

QPR are my team so I was hoping for a draw in that one.

IT was disappointing to see Brendan Rodgers lose his job at Liverpool at the weekend but I think the writing was on the wall in the summer.

Brendan is a good guy and has always been fair with me.

When I came back from my illness and he was at Swansea, he was very good to me.

But he had a difficult job at Liverpool and when the fans started to turn against him, there was only ever going to be one outcome.

I was surprised he didn’t leave in the summer.

When he was told to sack his mates and backroom staff in the shape of Colin Pascoe and Mike Marsh, I have to admit I was surprised he didn’t go with them.

He has not had that bad a start but I think there was no way back with the fans.

For me the biggest mistake he made was allowing Steven Gerrard to leave in the summer.

He should never have been let go.

When you look at Ryan Giggs at Manchester United, they made sure his loyalty to the club was rewarded and handed him a coaching role at Old Trafford.

I believe he will go on and manage United in the future.

Why Liverpool did not offer Steven something similar is beyond me.

I am sure if they had given him a new contract with a coaching role involved he would have snapped their hands off.

Instead he is out playing in Los Angeles and that is Liverpool’s loss.

THE bookies have my old mate Sam Allardyce favourite to take over at Sunderland after Dick Advocaat's exit.

I am not sure if he has been approached or whether he wants that challenge being back in management again so soon.

Knowing Sam like I do, though, I’d have every confidence, if he did get offered the job and take it, that he would steer Sunderland away from danger and to mid-table at the very least.

The way he goes about things, his thorough approach and his recruitment is first class.

It’s a tough job as Advocaat found out – maybe he should have gone in the summer after achieving his aim of saving Sunderland last season.

THERE are no Premier League games this weekend but I will be watching the internationals and hope Wales can qualify for next year’s European Championships.

It would be brilliant for them and for Chris Coleman who has done an excellent job.

He picked up where former Wanderer Gary Speed left off and continued what he started so it would be great to see them at a major tournament and I wish them luck.
