Burnden women lead the way

FOUR members of Burnden Roadrunners were in action at the Radcliffe 10K, and once again it was the women who were the stars of the show for the Smithills-based club.

Anne Ferguson won first prize in the F50 race while Leslie Fisher took second prize in the F45 category. Other Burnden athletes were Neil Nuttall and Dave Hitchen, who claimed a respectable fourth spot in the M60.

Results: Lesley Fisher 42:08; Dave Hitchen 46:42; Anne Ferguson 48:34; Neil Nuttall 57:35.

Meanwhile, due to illness and fitness problems afflicting other entrants from Burnden, Andy Staveley was the club's only representative in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Fell Race, which this year had been designated the World Mountain Running Association's long distance mountain challenge race.

While an international field of around 742 runners enjoyed perfect conditions, Staveley found that his three-hour performance in the London Marathon two weeks earlier had taken its toll and was disappointed to be struggling on tired legs in the later stages of the race. Down on last year's effort, he completed the 24 miles and 5,000 feet of ascent in 4:02:32 and finished 253rd overall.
