Burnden trophy haul

BURNDEN Road Runners won a haul of trophies at the inaugural Lever Park Trail Race in Rivington.

The club's women stole the show, their team of Lesley Fisher, Issy Hughes and Kirsty Preece finishing second, fifth and sixth respectively in the women's race to pip a strong Horwich team by one point to win.

Issy Hughes claimed first prize in the women's over-40s, Lesley Fisher won the women's over-45s, Anne Ferguson was first women's over-50s and Jacqui Beevers completed an almost clean sweep with first in the women's over-55s group.

Showing strength in depth, Shirley Staveley finished second women's over-40s and Kirsty Preece (women's over-35s) and Kath Page (women's over-40) were third in their races.

Dave Hitchen won the veterans over-60s category while Brian Duffy and Paul Christie came second and third in the veterans over-50s race, and Pete Kearsley was third in the veterans over-55s.

Burnden also claimed a creditable second place in the men's team prize, well beaten by Horwich Harriers and push a young University of Liverpool team into third place.
