BOLTON superstar Amir Khan says a potentially blockbusting fight with Floyd Mayweather Jnr could take place within the next 12 months – and possibly in Britain.

Khan has long-dreamed of a showdown with a man who has been pound-for-pound one of boxing’s all-time greats.

And after revealing he is close to stepping up a division to welterweight, a Mayweather meeting would be the primary aim.

The 26-year-old, who will marry fiancee Faryal Makhdoom later this month, told Sky Sports talks between the two camps have been promising and hopes the clash will happen sooner rather than later.

The ex-world light-welterweight champion said: “We are still in negotiations with Mayweather and it could be next or one fight after that.

“If we could bring it to the UK it would be amazing and give the UK fans the chance to see a huge fight.

“To get Mayweather to come to the UK would be massive. It would be the biggest fight ever in the UK and I am really going to try for that.

“An announcement could be made in a couple of weeks.”

Mayweather is due back in the ring in September after his win over mandatory challenger Robert Guerrero in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Khan, meanwhile, revealed to The Bolton News last week he has a December 7 date pencilled in for his return to action.

It looks increasingly likely that fight will be at 147lbs, particularly after Khan’s catch-weight 143lbs points victory over Julio Diaz in Sheffield last month.

It may be, however, he has to wait for Mayweather.

Khan added: “I’ve spoken to a number of fighters, Mayweather is one of them, as well as Devon Alexander and other fighters who are 147, because I am moving up to 147 now.

“I’m killing myself trying to stay at 140, and when I hit 145 or 146 I put a strain on myself. My natural weight is 155.

“I’ll be stronger moving up to 147 and I can work on my power.”

Despite his intentions, Khan may squeeze in one bout at his current light-welterweight level.

He recently stated a desire to have rematches with Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson, though the latter’s weekend defeat in Atlantic City, watched by Khan on Saturday, is likley to have quashed any future meeting.

Khan concedes he could yet meet the winner of the September 7 clash between Garcia and Peterson’s conquerer Lucas Matthysse, though.

He said: “I’d love to [fight Matthysse]. My style will suit Matthysse and I’d definitely go in with him.

“The 140lb division is the most exciting division and it’s making me want to stay in it. I’ve said I’m going to move up to 147 but I’ve not made that move yet. I want to mix it with these guys.”
