BURY world champion boxer Scott Quigg put in an explosive display at the Phones4U arena in Manchester tonight to retain his WBA super-bantamweight crown against Diego Silva.

Quigg delighted a packed home crowd of 20,000 as the chief support on the Carl Froch v George Groves battle and knocked his Argentine opponent down twice in the second round before the referee ended the contest after less than five minutes.

The 25-year-old, who trains under Joe Gallagher at Amir Khan's Gloves Gym in Bolton, was pumped up from the start and landed some good hooks in the first round.

He stepped it up in the second and after two right handers landed to floor his 30-year-old opponent, a pair of uppercuts ended the contest after a second knockdown.

Quigg's successful defence sees him extend his unbeaten run to 27 wins and just two draws.

It rounded off another successful night for Gallagher who also saw Gloves-based Anthony Crolla defend his WBO Inter-continental lightweight belt.

Meanwhile, Scott Cardle beat Kryzsztof Szot of Poland in a lighweight contest and Liverpudlian Stephen Smith claimed the vacant WBC interim Silver Super-fetherweight championship against Sergio Manuel Medina of Argentina.
