AMIR Khan is vowing to steal the show from Floyd Mayweather when he fights as chief support to the American in Las Vegas on May 3.

The Bolton boxing superstar had hoped to be fighting Mayweather as the main event at the MGM Grand but the man rated as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world opted to take on Marcos Maidana instead.

That meant Khan had to settle for a place on the undercard and a fight against Luis Collazo.

But the 27-year-old believes his match-up will be the real fight the fans want to see and is promising to show what he can do stepping up to the welterweight division for the first time after a year out of the ring.

Khan said: “A lot of people think I will be ring rusty.

“But I believe I can steal the show on May 3.

“We were very close to getting Mayweather and maybe it will happen in the future – I hope so because I want to fight the best fighters. Coming through this fight with my best performance will be a step towards doing that.

“Not being top of the bill maybe takes a bit of pressure off me – not having to work hard to sell the fight.

“Hopefully, though, it will be the last time on the undercard for me.

“It does give me an opportunity to show what I can do to Mayweather’s fans who will get to see me fight as chief support.

“It can only get me closer to a fight with him and that is good for me.”

Khan still yearns for a future showdown with Mayweather but says there are other options in his new weight division like his former Freddie Roach camp colleague Manny Pacquiao.

The pair are friends but Khan is not ruling out a meeting in the future.

He added: “If Mayweather does not happen there could be others to fight like Manny Pacquiao.

“He is my friend but sometimes friends fight each other.

“He is a great fighter and I have never shied away from big fights.

“If that fight made sense then why not take it on?”

A Pacquiao date may be further down the line but, for now, Khan is concentrating on the present, admitting looking too far into the future has seen him lose focus in the past.

He said: “It is disrespectful to keep talking about Mayweather when I am fighting Collazo.

“I need to focus on my opponent and not look too far ahead.

“I have been guilty of that in the past.

“I need to make sure I perform on May 3 and then see what’s next for me.”
