AMIR Khan was at ringside to see his little brother win a first-round knockout at a charity boxing extravaganza for Bolton Lads and Girls Club.

The Bolton boxing sensation cheered and clapped as his brother Haroon, aged 15, showed his class by knocking out his opponent from Northern Ireland.

Amir was just one of the stars who turned up on Friday to support the annual black-tie dinner and fundraiser, which aims to raise more than £75,000 for the Spa Road youth club.

Coronation Street's Bill Tarmey, who plays Jack Duckworth, former footballer and manager Ian Dowie, Manchester City legend Francis Lee, and Worsley's British light-middleweight boxing champion Jamie Moore, also appeared.

They watched 11 bouts of amateur boxing and at the same time raised cash for the club's Independence Group, which provides support for children and young people with physical and learning disabilities.

Amir said he was delighted to see his brother in such top form.

"He was brilliant. He did really well and he's one to watch for the future," Amir said.

The Olympic silver medallist showed his star quality when he met all the young fighters, who were desperate to get an autograph and a picture with their hero.

He chatted with the youngsters, as his dad Shah Khan and his former coach from Bury Boxing Club, Mick Jelley, prepared Haroon for his fight.

Amir said: "I'm glad to be able to come here and support the club and the young people because I was an amateur once and I am from Bolton, so it's important for me to come down here on nights like this."

But even Amir can get starstruck sometimes, as he did last week when he met Hollywood superstar Sylvester Stallone at the London premiere of Rocky Balboa.

He said: "He was a very nice guy, very humble and down to earth. I really liked the film and I thought he looked brilliant. I hope I'm like that when I'm 60."

All the money raised from the event will buy vital new equipment.

Jerry Glover, Lads and Girls Club chief executive, said: "This is the biggest youth club in the country and this is our biggest boxing event of the year.

"We have 300 guests from the area, at £2,000 a table. We are lucky to get such fantastic support."

Among the prizes auctioned was a ride on a stunt plane, which was bought for £4,000 and two tickets to watch Il Divo in concert in Manchester, which went for £1,000.

The main organiser behind the event was Nick Hopkinson, who was recently awarded an MBE for his fundraising efforts for the club.
