BOLTON'S boxing success has been recognised after two of the town's heavyweights won prestigious honours at the Ring Magazine awards.

Joe Gallagher, who has his camp at Amir Khan’s Gloves Community Centre, scooped the Trainer of the Year accolade at the awards on Monday, while new world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, who trains in Bolton, was named Fighter of the Year.

Gallagher, who becomes the first UK-born coach to receive the honour, has steered three of his fighters to world titles with Scott Quigg, Anthony Crolla and Liam Smith all training in the town before clinching world belts.

Following the award, the 47-year-old told Ring magazine: “Just to be nominated again (he was short-listed last year) is a huge honour but to win is absolutely incredible.

“When you look at the trainers I was up against: Arnulfo Obando, for the work with Roman Gonzalez, Abel Sanchez, for his success with Gennady Golovkin, and of course Peter Fury for taking Tyson to the heavyweight championship of the world — I honestly can’t believe it.”

Wilmslow fighter Fury was rewarded for ending the 11-year reign of Wladimir Klitschko last month, a fight which also earned him the Upset of the Year award.
