AMIR Khan believes his new gym could produce a medal contender at the 2012 Olympics in London.

The 20-year-old Bolton superstar has ploughed £700,000 of his own money into Gloves Gym, in France Street.

And he is convinced that his state of the art facility can produce a production line of talented boxers.

Khan says he has been overwhelmed by the amount of interest shown in his new gym from youngsters in the area.

He is confident that, with the quality coaching and facilties available, the club can produce future champions.

"I am sure my brother Haroon will be at the Olympics and it will be great if we can get others as well," he said.

"It is a massive project with professional and amateur training next to each other. I don't think there will be another gym that does it in this way. We have already had lots of interest from people asking me when is it going to open. I am sure we will be full."

Khan currently trains in Salford but will move to Bolton along with his trainer Oliver Harrison and his stable of boxers.

"I will train during the day when it will be private but after that I might do another session in an evening when people can watch me train.

"It means a lot to me and will be a big thing for me to have a gym like this at such a young age."

But the Olympic silver medallist appealled for the community to step in and help him find the £300,000 needed each year to finance the project, which opens in August.

"I have put in £700,000 of my own money and need the help of local businesses and the community," he said.

"Boxing has helped me in my life and I want to put something back into the community. It will keep kids off the street and help them to get fit, but we need to get sponsors to keep the club running."
