Trio star in top events

HAROON Khan was celebrating after winning gold at the Three Nations championships in Liverpool.

The junior ABA champion, who was representing England, was far too good for Wales’ Joshua Brain to claim the 51kg title at Everton Park on Saturday.

Khan and fellow Bolton boxer Chris Blinkhorn were due to go to head to head at the international tournament.

But the Withins School Police Club fighter was forced to pull out after struggling to make the weight.

Khan, though, was in top form as he produced a stylish display to defeat Brain 12-4 and win gold for the second year in a row at the Three Nations.

The 17-year-old, the younger brother of Olympic silver medalist Amir, now faces a busy weekend when he takes part in a Four Nations event in Dublin, where he is guaranteed three fights. England, Ireland Germany and Italy are all involved and Khan will come up against the 54k champions on successive days from tomorrow. And it was a treble joy for Bury ABC as Khan’s club-mates, Sahir Iqbal and Hassan Mahmood, helped England defeat their Irish counterparts in Dungarvan 24 hours later.

Farnworth’s Iqbal beat Darrin Pollock 4-0, while England capatin Mahmood defeated Jack Connolly 9-2 to complete a superb weekend for Mick Jelley’s club.
