AMIR Khan took a step closer to agreeing a deal with Argentinian Marcos Maidana for the second defence of his WBA light-welterweight title.
The Bolton boxer, who this week announced he had broken his links with top British promoter Frank Warren to sign for USA based Golden Boy Promotions, has made a verbal agreement to fight the mandatory challenger.
Further negotiations will now take place to finalise the deal, although the time and place is still very much in the air.
It will almost certainly be held after Manny Pacquaio’s next fight on March 13, to ensure that coach Freddie Roach is in Khan’s corner.
It could still be held in Britain if American cable giant HBO do not want to hold it on an undercard of one of their major fight nights.
The big-punching Maidana, who has lost just once, is not a big draw in the States and it does not seem feasible that the two could headline a show.
Khan would love to make his debut in the USA but has not turned his back on Britain and will still fight here on a regular basis.
