ALEX Matvienko retained his British Masters light-middleweight title insensational fashion when his opponent had to retire at the end of the fifth round with a broken rib.
The Great Lever boxer, in action at the Reebok, took a couple of powerful shots himself from the hard-hitting Welshman Geraint Harvey before producing the killer-blow. Matvienko, dubbed the One Man Riot, produced a stunning body-punch at the end of the fifth and his opponent failed to come out for the sixth.
“We had a game plan and it worked brilliantly,” said Matvienko.
“I knew he would blow himself out after four rounds and that was how it happened.”
Chris Blinkhorn beat Harroon Khan for the first time in four attempts when the Castle Hill boxer won another close encounter on points after a majority decision.
Khan, representing Bury ABC, thought his precision punching had won him the regional senior 54kg ABA title in Gorton, but it was Blinkhorn’s higher workrate that caught the judges’ eye.
Enzo Maccarinelli, the former WBO cruiserweight world champion, stopped Hungarian Krisztian Jaksi in the first round at Liverpool's Echo Arena on Friday night. Elite stable-mate Tobias Webb drew with Lee Duncan.
