ALVIRO Petersen and Ashwell Prince sent records tumbling as Lancashire ploughed on towards a priceless LV= County Championship victory over Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay yesterday.

South Africans Petersen and Prince completed a mammoth third-wicket partnership of 501 in 89 overs as they batted through the second morning and into the afternoon to underpin a total of 698-5 declared.

Having advanced from 104-2 shortly after lunch on day one, they shared Lancashire’s highest ever partnership, the fourth highest third-wicket partnership ever in first-class cricket and the second best in the history of this competition.

It was also the 13th highest partnership for any wicket anywhere in the world.

Petersen went on to make a career best 286 off 376 balls and Prince a career best 261 off 258, taking his tally for the season to 1,311 runs in his 12th match.

Steven Croft also added a brisk 57 not out before Glamorgan responded with 165-6 from 52 overs at close, with Glen Chapple taking three of them.

It is the first time in history two Lancashire players have scored a double hundred in the same innings.

When Prince fell, caught at long-off against seamer David Lloyd, Lancashire were 605-3 at 1.57pm - 24 hours and two minutes after their second wicket had fallen on day one.

Shortly afterwards, Lloyd picked up his third wicket of the innings when Petersen holed out to long-off, leaving the score at 625-4. Croft declared shortly before 3pm when James Faulkner chipped Colin Ingram’s leg-spin to cover.

Although the pitch conditions offered little help for Lancashire’s bowlers, scoreboard pressure told when the hosts started their reply an hour before tea.

Jacques Rudolph was bowled playing down the wrong line against Chapple at the end of the sixth over before Ingram was caught behind for a duck at the end of the eighth.

Shortly after tea, Chris Cooke was bowled shouldering arms to Chapple before Faulkner trapped Will Bragg lbw, leaving the score at 70-4 after 21 overs.

Mark Wallace and Lloyd (21) shared 54 inside 19 overs to steady the ship until Arron Lilley was introduced into the attack to bowl the 40th and struck with his fourth ball to get the latter caught at point.

Simon Kerrigan later had Craig Meschede caught at mid-wicket, leaving the score at 157-6 in the 49th. Wallace will resume today on 39 not out.
