HASEEB Hameed and Josh Bohannon are just two of the names to have come through the ranks at Farnworth Social Circle and progressed at county level in the junior ranks and are knocking on the door for future spots in the senior set-up.

But the Piggott Park side does not look like shaking off that tag of nurturing top talent if these photographs are anything to go by.

The club held two weeks of summer camps at their ground thanks to 'Sports for all' grants with the first one being multi-sports and the other cricket.

John Barrow, chairman of Farnworth Social Circle, was delighted with the success of the event.

"This was the third year we have been running it and we usually stage three a year including one in the half-term holidays at Whit then two in the summer.

"It is for all different sports and there were 30 children aged between eight and 11 attending the camp.

"It was a bit of a shame that on the final day there was some rain but to get play on nine of the 10 is not bad.

"Our aim is to get children involved in sport of all different abilities and hopefully they can come through to play for us.

"They really enjoyed it and as part of the grant we gave them some healthy food for all five days."

Player Tim Rees and his sports company ran the sessions and Barrow believes they may have laid down foundations to attract future players at the camps.

He said: "We would normally get one or two players who join us after the sessions.

"Unfortunately this one was too late in the cricket season to get them involved.

"It is up to us to get those people who are interested to turn up in the winter and we have to keep in contract with them.

"We have had lots of players from different backgrounds coming along to play.

"The club have been going into the schools to attract new players and make them aware of the camps.

"One season we did not have an Under-11s team and now we are finding it tough to get players for the Under-15s.

"We are now getting five or six year-olds to come to take part and possibly play the sport.

"With our training camps in the area so if we don't get that many joining us then perhaps other sides locally can too benefit."

Barrow believes they have to encourage children to enjoy it.

He said: "Cricket is not a cheap sport compared to football as all you need is some boots and shin pads and the teams provide the kits.

"But cricket is more expensive with the whites and bats and pads but if we encourage them then they won't thinks about it as much."

With the likes of Hameed and Bohannon coming through in recent years, Barrow believes there may have been some talented stars from these camps playing cricket.

He said: "We have been very fortunate and had some good cricketers here.

"Josh and Haseeb have been some of the names to have done well but you have to make your own luck.

"We have a good coaching structure in place trying to develop."

Barrow insists he has been impressed by the attitude of young players at the club.

He said: "The kids at the club are as keen as mustard and we have joked that if we put up some tents on the pitch and give them some food and also offer coaching then they would lap it up.

"They just love to play and it is great to watch these young players in action and we are working hard to give them high standards of coaching for the future."
