I WRITE regarding Neil Bonnar’s comments (The Bolton News, September 17) concerned the naming of the Bolton League and Bolton and District Cricket Association’s new partnership, which is due to be voted upon on September 28.

Mr Bonnar never came up with a name for the overall league but suggested that its two divisions from 2017 should be called Division One and Association.

There is no room here to go into the whys and wherefores of how divisive and inappropriate such titles would be. The situation could be further complicated if the ECB grant Division One its Premier League status.

Primarily, Mr Bonnar's suggestion fails to acknowledge that this new league is a partnership of two equal bodies.

Formed as much to ensure the survival and strength of both, it will be a major force in extending the reaches of local cricket.

However we proceed together, each group will always have its traditions and history but that does not mean we have to keep the past alive.

It will be sufficient to memorialise the achievements, the characters and the honours within the annual handbook.

There is far more to be gained now as our officials, players and supporters go forward with the compromise, cooperation, enthusiasm and hard work for this collaboration to be successful and finally complete the circle that broke in 1930.

It is with this in mind and the feeling that while this David could not slay the Greater Manchester Goliath it will be a continual reminder of its strong independent existence, and I propose the new body, consisting of Divisions One and Two, be named The Bolton Cricket Alliance.
