THIS week, with Golborne having our free Saturday, I decided to offer my services to sub score for Lostock at Little Lever to give me a chance to look at some of the other sides in the Bolton League.

The outlook, to say the least, was bleak, but having worked Friday night there were no further outbreaks of rain forecast and maybe a possibility of play.

When I arrived, the weather was fairly bright but a couple of sharp showers put paid to any chance of the game being played and it was called off at 2.40pm.

Credit to both sides who were clearly, from what I saw, keen to make a game of it.

This brings me to the seemingly touchy subject of the Greater Manchester Cricket League taking the decision to cancel their full Saturday programme of games on the Friday morning.

Following the debate on Twitter, it appeared a lot of players were less than happy – and it is not a decision that sits well with me either.

I always think the away team should travel whether it is a fruitless journey or not.

The worst experience I can recall was arriving at Edgworth just as all the players were heading back to Golborne.

Weather is often localised, this fact being borne out by seven out of the 10 BCL games being completed on Saturday.

On days like last Saturday, players always have the mindset that someone, somewhere will play a full or reduced-over game.

Very rarely have I known every game to be abandoned, and that makes me think the decision of the GMCL was taken rather too quickly.

So, not only no cricket game but also my football team Blackpool lost 4-0 at home to Wigan and are virtually condemned to League Two next year – a fact Mrs Vincent hasn't yet mentioned!

On the plus side, there are more new grounds – and Wetherspoons pubs – to visit.

With the forecast looking better for this weekend, we can only hope decisions like the GMCL's to call games off don't have to be taken again.

Hope you all have a great weekend.
