HEATON know there may be some hammerings to come, but captain Gary Garner hopes his side are on course to meet their season target.

The Lower Pools men have won two out of two games so far this season, but the bigger picture has not changed as they keep their sights set on a top-half finish.

“That would be fantastic,” said Garner. “Our aim is to get half way up. We are not getting carried away.

“We will surprise one or two teams. We don’t expect to challenge the big boys and we know there will be one or two hammerings on the way but we will deal with them and keep our focus on the target.

“It will be very satisfying if we get halfway because we are only paying a pro.”

That pro, Humayan Farhat, was in stunning form in last weekend’s 196-run home victory over Little Hulton when he scored 140.

Garner, whose side visit Standish in the league tomorrow and host Walkden in the 40-over competition on Sunday, says it is Farhat’s last season before he retires from playing but says the pro has a big part to play in Heaton’s game plan before he calls it a day.

“He is retiring this year and we’re hoping he has a good season to finish off,” said the captain.

“What we’re trying to do is assemble our young lads and bat around him and get him in the position where he can do that, and that’s what we have done the last couple of games.”
