LAST Sunday was the culmination of both divisions' cup competitions in the West Lancashire Cricket League.

The Beardsley Cup final was played at Blackrod Cricket Club with Atherton playing Sutton.

Atherton won the toss and elected to field, which soon appeared to be the right decision with the Atherton bowlers restricting Sutton to 95 all out off 35 overs. David Baines (3-6) and James Hatton (3-28) did most of the damage with only Ben Scott (28no) offering any resistance to Atherton.

In reply, Atherton coasted home with 15 overs to spare, finishing on 96-4.

Jack Welch (35no) picked up the man-of-the-match award for his batting and wicketkeeping.

Down the A6 at Little Hulton, the Hanson Cup final took place between Little Hulton and First Division leaders Burscough.

Little Hulton won the toss and elected to bat, they found runs hard to get as Burscough’s bowlers restricted them to 101 all out off 38 overs.

Only two Little Hulton batters scored more than 20 runs and the wickets were spread evenly among the Burscough bowlers.

In reply, the visitors took just 24 overs to reach their target with the loss of six wickets. Burscough will now be hoping to emulate Atherton’s league and cup double by winning the First Division title.

It was really good to see the number of junior players involved across all four teams on Sunday.

In total 25 junior players were listed on the team cards which was a great advertisement for the league ethos of development of junior players.
