SO the final weekend of the Bolton League season is upon us.and the trophies have almost all been handed out.

Farnworth Social Circle has secured the Bolton League title, Walkden have won the Hamer Cup, while the BCL 40-over final will be played between Horwich and Farnworth at Heaton on Sunday, September 18.

Congratulations to all the winners and well done to all involved at all Bolton League clubs, whether you have won something, managed to secure a first division spot, or are in the second division for 2017 ready to re-group and pounce for promotion.

Hopefully 2017 will see some competitive local cricket, giving everyone something to play for.

This year’s format has been frustrating to say the least, but it was always going to be like that when 21 teams play against each other only once.

Little Lever and Eagley will fight it out for a place in the top division, so good luck to all involved.

That brings me on to, in my humble opinion, the most important matter of the weekend and the final of the Lancashire Knockout Cup, where my team Farnworth will play Denton West of the Greater Manchester Cricket League Premier Division.

Such a fixture brings up all types of permutations, potential rivalries and opinions.

Once we get on the field tomorrow – at the ridiculously early start time of 11am – it will simply be one good team against another.

I know I'm certainly biased but this is a Bolton-based paper when all said and done, so I'm hoping Farnworth can bring home the cup and give the Bolton Cricket League another winner to settle a few of these silly arguments.

The Bolton League has a fabulous record in the Lancashire Knockout, having 11 winners since the competition started in 1972, where Westhoughton were narrowly beaten by Timperley.

Other Bolton League winners of the prestigious trophy being Egerton 1977, Little Lever 1978, Farnworth SC 1987, Westhoughton 1998, Tonge 2001, Walkden 2002, 2003 and 2008, Farnworth 2010, and our last winners Greenmount in 2011.

The Northern League just pips the Bolton League by having eight more winners and five more appearances in the final.

It's safe to say the Lancashire Knockout is probably the most coveted competition for any amateur cricketer in the county.

As you may have already read, this year's final will be hosted at Middleton Cricket Club and not Emirates Old Trafford, much to the disappointment of many players and spectators, and lots of conspiracy theories and opinions have been flying around on the Internet and social media recently.

Whatever the reason, it is what it is – there’s nothing that can be done as Emirates Old Trafford will not suddenly become available, though England’s performance against Pakistan in their Twenty20 clash on Wednesday night was that poor that game could have been played on Leverhulme Park.

Joking aside, I'm sure Middleton will put on a fantastic show, roll the red carpet out and welcome both sides and their supporters.

Hopefully the weather is kind to us and this year’s final can be a memorable one.

Fingers crossed we can give the Bolton League another winner to shout about come 6pm tomorrow.
