Lancashire will probably not see Andrew Flintoff wearing the Red Rose again until next summer, but he gave them something special to remember him by with a blistering 93 off 41 balls in last night’s Twenty20 Cup win over Derbyshire.
The 31-year-old links up with England’s Ashes squad today safe in the knowledge that his career best assault has booked the Lightning’s place in the quarter-finals of this competition.
Lancashire totalled a club record 220-5, and Derbyshire could only respond with half-centuries from Chris Rogers and Greg Smith.
Flintoff hit nine fours and six sixes, and was on for a spectacular century until Smith pulled off a stunning one-handed catch on the square-leg boundary.
He shared an entertaining fourth wicket stand of 99 in ten overs with Indian VVS Laxman, whose 63 off 45 balls at the top of the order was also a career best.
Paul Horton’s 24 off 15 balls helped the Lightning, who had decided to bat first, settle, while Laxman continued the attack with his classy effort.
Lancashire, who top the North Division, travel to Durham tonight.
