BOLTON tennis ace George Morgan has gone out of the US Open at the semi-final stage in both the singles and doubles events.

The 18-year-old 10th seed was beaten 6-0 7-6 (7-2) at the hands of fellow Briton Oliver Golding, who now meets some time doubles partner and Czech top seed Jiri Vesely.

Morgan led his head-tohead with Golding 5-3 going into the match, but he was compehensively outplayed.

However, Morgan had battled back from shaky starts on a number of occasions and set about reducing his deficit, squaring the second set at 4-4 after failing to win a game in the first set.

The former Rivington and Blackrod High School pupil then saved match point on his own serve at 5-4 but his resistance was ended in the tie-break as Londoner Golding stormed to victory, celebrating on his knees before hugging Morgan at the net.

Doubles third seeds Morgan and Austrian Dominic Thiemj missed out on a finals place losing to Maxim Dubarenco of Moldova and Vladyslav Manafov of Ukraine 7-6 6-4.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray’s hopes of reaching the US Open final came to an end as Rafael Nadal outclassed him in four sets.

The British number one lost 6-4 6-2 3-6 6-3 in three hours and 24 minutes to ensure his wait for a maiden Grand Slam title goes on.
